Founded in the 1960’s by Francesco Paolo Avallone. A lawyer and professor at the University of Naples
whose passionate interest in the ancient viticulture of Campania fueled his desire to research and resurrect
the grapes introduced 3000 years ago by the Greeks but made famous by the Romans.
The grapes of Campania are more ancient than Brunello, Chianti and even Bordeaux but when Phylloxera hit the
region much of these historic vines were destroyed.
With the resources of the University, Francesco set out to save and restore the old clones and re-establish the
noble Roman wines. Using old photographs of the different varietals, he and a team from the University scoured
the region to find vines that survived and began one of the most ambitious experiments in preserving ancient
varietals. Clones saved from extinction include Aglianico, Piedirosso, Abbuoto, and Falanghina.
Today the winery is run by his children Salvatore and Maria Ida with Riccardo Cotarella as the oenologist.
All the vineyards of Villa Matilde are owned by the Avallone Family with the wines all estate bottled.
In keeping with history, the blends used in several wines reflect the blend used by the Romans: Falerno Del
Massico Bianco is 100% Falanghina and Falerno Del Massico Rosso is 80% Aglianico and 20% Piedirosso.
THE ESTATES of VILLA MATILDE
The winery of Villa Matilde in Cellole is approximately 60 kilometers north of Naples
and 160 Kilometers south of Rome. There are 3 distinct areas in Campania where Villa
Matilde own vineyards--San Castrese, Rocca dei Leoni, and Tenuta Altaville. The
properties combined are 250 acres of which 173 are under vine.
SAN CASTRESE
Located less than 10 kilometers from the sea San Castrese is the primary source of
grapes for the wines made at the Villa Matilde. All the vineyards of San Castrese are protected by the Colli Aurinci to the
north, the extinct volcano Roccamonfina to the east and the Massico Mountains to the south. The vines are planted on
gentle slopes between 140 to 180 meters a.s.l with the Gulf of Gaeta often visible to the east. The soil is a unique
composition of lava stone, ash, and other volcanic materials with a friable rock known as Tassone. 95% of the Falerno
DOC is owned and within the Castrese Estate.
Falanghina vines with the Colli
Aurinci to the North. The villa has a
perfectly intact Roman Cellar.
The Caracci vineyard in
front of the Volcano
Roccamonfina to the east.
San Castrese Aglianico vineyards
with the Montagne Massico in the
backround to the south.
ROCCA DEL LEONI
The properties in Benevento are 80 kilometers almost due east of the main estate near Mount Taburno. The climate is a
bit cooler due to afternoon winds. The vineyards are located on various slopes on Mount Taburno which like San
Castrese is noted for the volcanic soils rich in phosphorus and potassium. Old vines planted on steeply pitched hills use
different clones of Falanghina and Algianico which produce wines with unique characteristics from those of the Falerno
wines produced in San Castrese.
TENUTA ALTAVILLA
The estate is about 40 kilometers south of Benevento near the town of Avellino and is known for the production of Fiano
di Avellino and Greco di Tufo. Due to DOCG laws, these wines are made at Altavilla. The vines are all older and planted
on various, high altitude, slopes made of predominantly tuffaceous soil with good amounts of clay.
