The making of a monument - four legacies carved into U.S. history.
Towering above the Black Hills of South Dakota stands America's most treasured monument,
Mount Rushmore - a crowning testament to the great leaders who symbolize the founding,
growth, development and preservation of the United States.
Four former U.S. presidents are honored on Mount Rushmore, including George Washington, leader
of the American Revolution and the first President of the United States; Thomas Jefferson, the
author of the Declaration of Independence and a strong voice for the defense of liberty; Abraham
Lincoln, who played a large role in ending slavery in the United States; and Teddy Roosevelt, a
popular President whose foreign policy brought several new territories under U.S. control.
The planning and construction of Mount Rushmore took nearly two decades. But its creation was
looked upon unfavorably by Native Americans who were promised the Black Hills in a treaty, later
broken by the United States. In order to honor the legacy of the Native Americans who lived in
western South Dakota, an even larger monument of the Native American war leader Crazy Horse is
currently under construction.
Featuring breathtaking visual storytelling surrounding America’s Shrine of Democracy, Mount
Rushmore, Monument Men explores the landscape, the caves, and the vantages of Mount
Rushmore National Park. Chip into the history of the men whose faces are sculpted, and the men
who sculpted them, in this seven-part chronicle containing detailed biographies and virtual tours of
Rushmore and the nearby Crazy Horse Memorial.
