Traditionally, Disaster recovery (DR) policies, procedures, and Solutions focused on the IT or technology systems that support business functions, but not on the ease of implementation. It involved humongous efforts with the end result sometimes being not so
satisfying. Disaster Recovery functionality Should provide ease of use, quick and effective processes to ensure user’s environments
suffer the least amount of downtime. Also, provide consistency across platforms, and support various configurations streamlining
the implementation.
The CA ARCserve Backup Disaster Recovery option lets you restore your server reliably, making more efficient use of time by taking
you from boot media, to backup media, to an operational state and allows users with minimal server configuration experience to

from network shared folders, and initiate Windows setup. CA ARCserve Backup lets you recover Windows Server 2003, Windows
Server 2008, and Windows 7 systems running WinPE from a disaster using a WinPE recovery CD.

BENEFITS
CA ARCserve Backup DR Option automatically generates and saves
emergency data for each protected machine when you submit a
full backup job. The data is saved on the backup server, on backup
media, and, optionally, on a remote computer. In the event of a
disaster, the Option can recover its protected computers to their
most recent backup state.

Provides a uniform Disaster Recovery method for different
Windows Platforms. (Windows 2003 x86/x64/IA64, Windows
2008 x86/x64/IA64, Windows 2008 R2 x64/IA64).

Supports restoring data on iSCSI connected disks. Also, lets
you recover a physical server to a virtual machine in virtual
infrastructures like VMware ESX Server and Microsoft Hyper-V
Server.

Lets you create customized WinPE DR images using the Boot
Kit Wizard utility. The utility integrates NIC, FC, SCSI, RAID
drivers, iSCSI programs, and DR patches into the ISO image.
CA ARCserve Backup also lets you perform disaster recovery using
the incremental and differential sessions or using a synthetic full
backup session.
CA ARCserve Backup Disaster Recovery Option supports local and
remote disaster recovery for Windows Server 2003, Windows
Server 2008 and remote disaster recovery for Windows 7.
Install/Configure
You can install CA ARCserve Backup Disaster Recovery Option during the time of CA ARCserve Backup installation or at a different
time.
It is recommended that you store machine specific disaster recovery information to a remote location on an alternate computer
other than the Backup server. When you back up a local or remote CA ARCserve Backup client computer, the CA ARCserve Backup
server saves the computer-specific information required to perform disaster recovery tasks. If the CA ARCserve Backup server fails,
the computer-specific disaster recovery information can be lost as well. Storing machine specific disaster recovery information to a
remote location on an alternate computer will help you avoid this type of data loss.
You can enable the alternate location while configuring the DR option after installation or at a later time. To enable this feature,
you must first create a shared folder on the remote computer, and then configure the option to send information to that shared
folder.
How Disaster Recovery Option works in SAN Configuration
CA ARCserve Backup Disaster Recovery Option supports backup servers in Storage Area Network (SAN) configurations. You can
recover the primary SAN backup servers and any member SAN servers in Windows Server 2003 environments. The option can
recover any SAN server, as long as a full computer backup was performed using CA ARCserve Backup.
When recovering primary or member server, the option can determine if the current server is a primary server or member server.
If the current server is a primary server, the option connects to the SAN and uses the devices on the SAN directly. If the current
server is a member server, the option first contacts the primary server. The option then communicates with the primary SAN server
to handle any device operations on the SAN.
Recovering from a Disaster using WinPE
CA ARCserve Backup lets you recover from a disaster on
Windows Server 2003, Windows Server 2008, and
Windows 7 systems using WinPE recovery CD.
 Insert the WinPE recovery CD into the computer that
you want to recover.
 Select the operating system you want to boot from
and the Preferred Language.
 Locate the disaster recovery information (Select DR
Information from any location/Select DR Information from
backup server/alternate location).
 The Pre-flight Check displays configuration list for you
to detect and resolve potential environment issues.
 CA ARCserve Backup DR Option automatically restores
your disk partitions according to the saved disk layout
information.
 CA ARCserve Backup DR lets you specify sessions
allocated to each drive, in hard disk. You can also recover
incremental/differential backup sessions simultaneously.
 The Restore Process screen displays a progress bar on
the estimated time remaining of the recovery.

Reboot the machine. After machine reboots, CA ARCserve Backup Database Recovery Wizard opens to help you restore CA
ARCserve Backup Database sessions.
Disaster Recovery Utilities
CA ARCserve Backup contains various Disaster Recovery utilities that help you perform disaster recovery. These Utilities can also
help resolve issues you encounter during the Disaster Recovery process. You can find the Utilities button on the bottom of each CA
ARCserve Backup Disaster Recovery screen. Following are few of the Disaster Recovery Utilities:

Load Driver Utility to load NIC/SCSI/FC drivers if the network driver is unavailable or if the hard disks cannot be detected .

Network Configuration Utility to configure IP addresses.

iSCSI Configuration Utility to check and configure iSCSI connections for disaster recovery in your current environment.

Activity Log to view the Disaster Recovery activities.

Q: Do I need license for the CA ARCserve Backup Disaster Recovery Option?
A: Yes, you must install and license the CA ARCserve Backup Disaster Recovery Option to be able to recover data using the DR
Option.
Q: Can I perform disaster recovery from a CA ARCserve Backup server other than the server from which the backup was
performed?
A: Yes, as long as the media can be used by the new server and new server information is present on the machine-specific
recovery disk. For Windows XP and Windows 2003, You can perform disaster recovery from a different server using the
Advanced Disaster Recovery wizard by entering the server details and the IP address, when prompted.
Q: Can I reconfigure or set up an alternate location after the option has been set up?
A: Yes, use the Config button on the Create Boot Kit Wizard to access the Alternate Location for DR dialogue.
Q: My original system has a Windows 2003 Server Edition operating system. Can I perform disaster recovery using the Windows
2003 Enterprise Server Edition CD?
A: No. You should not use a different version of the operating system’s CD to perform the disaster recovery process.
