Themes of the Planetarium 2016-2017
★General Program
From how to search for stars in the night sky to popular astronomical phenomena, we will cover a variety of topics
surrounding astronomy and space each month. The Curator will give a live explanation during the programs,
which will be aimed at a general audience.
April: "Solve the mystery of neutrino"
The Nobel Prize in Physics 2015 was awarded
"for the discovery of neutrino oscillations".
We project inside of Super-Kamiokande, that is a observatory discovered proof for neutrino oscillations, on the
planetarium dome.
We tell you how related neutrino is to the Universe itself.
May: "Extra-terrestrial life in the solar system"
Mars has a thin atmosphere and water.
Environment on Mars is very similar to the Earth.
Water was also found inside Jupiter and Saturn's satellites far away from the Sun.
Is there life on them?
June: "Want to see Saturn's rings"
Best chance to see Saturn in this year will be early summer.
You can see the much-loved Saturn's rings with a simple telescope.
Why don't you get one and enjoy star-watching.
July: "Tanabata" star festival and the Milky Way"
The Milkey Way separating "Orihimeboshi (Vega)" and "Hikoboshi (Altair)" in the summer night sky is a band of
stars seen from inside of our Galaxy.
Let's travel into space and watch it from outside !
August: "Strange motion of Mars"
The Red Planet, Mars is approaching to constellation Scorpius and can be seen beside a bright reddish star,
Antares.
The name of Antares means "rival of Mars".
2016 is the year to fight between these red stars. Don't miss it !
September: "Calender and the harvest moon"
The Japanese harvest moon "Otsukimi" is not always full moon.
This year, 2days after Otsukimi is the full moon.
How dose this strange thing happen?
October: "International Space Station"
The International Space Station (ISS) is the largest artificial satellite,
in low Earth orbit (about 400km altitude) and can often be seen with the naked eye from Earth.
What is it’s own history and the facts, how can you find it in the sky?
November: "Age of the Universe: 13.8 billion years"
A very low energy and a very uniform radiation fills the Universe.
It is called the Cosmic Background Radiation, the afterglow of the big bang.
By examining it precisely,
we can find out how the Universe was born.
December: "Christmas Night sky"
A big star is placed at the top of the Christmas tree.
Why do we celebrate Christmas at the end of December?
It is related to the altitude of the noon sun.
January:
Formation of stars
The sun was born about 4.6 billion years ago.
As clouds of dust and gas spreading in the universe begins to collect in one area,
it becomes a star.
Each star has its own beginning. We trace the mysterious process.
February: X-ray universe
Black holes and supernova remnants let out powerful x-rays.
But this x-ray does not reach the ground, so we observe it using satellites.
Japan is leading the world in this field.
March: Tales of Twin Stars
From time immemorial people have looked up at the starry sky, and dreamed up various stories and created
imaginary shapes.
Greek mythology is well known as constellation tales but we also have charming ones in Japan.
★Family Hour show
These shows are for families with small and young school children. It is also suitable for visitors to see the show
for the first time. Fun programs show you tonight's starry sky and take you to on a space journey.
Planetarium Information
★All shows are presented by a live in Japanese language only.
★Your seats are assigned automatically. You need not make a line for a seat. Enjoy and explore the exhibitions
until you hear a building announcement as a reminder to enter the Dome. But you are responsible for being on

Dome.
★There is no restroom inside the Dome. Please use any restroom on each floor before entering. Please see a
building map for more information.
★Your umbrella can be put in a umbrella stand on the back of your own seat.
★All programs in our planetarium are conducted by alive presentation with a curator. Please remain silent.
★To protect all visitors and live shows, staff may ask any visitor any time to stop any behavior (include talking,
yelling, baby’s crying, walking around or using cell phones) which may disturb other visitors.
★Nagoya City Science Museum closes at 17:00 except planetarium. Make sure that you will not able to see the
exhibitions after the last show (starting at 16:40).
