Key Features:
Recording form illustrates decreasing
• Contrast Levels 100%, 25%, 10%, 5%, 2.5%
contrast sensitivity in the right eye.
• Both ETDRS Letters and Continuous
Reading Examples
• 20/400 to 20/10 in 17 increments

and Letter Size
• Pages tabbed at each contrast level
• Instructions, Score Card, Recording Form and Answer Key
Near Contrast testing can provide an efficient means to detect or track ocular pathologies, including glaucoma, ARMD, diabetic
retinopathy, cataract, and keratoconus. Low contrast acuity loss measurement can also be helpful in demonstrating to patients and
their families the need for intervention such as cataract surgery or occupational and lifestyle changes. Richmond Products has
developed a new Adult Near-Contrast Test Booklet with contrast sensitivity levels of 100, 25, 10, 5 and 2.5 percent using Michelson
measures. These are printed on high-quality styrene plastic for long-term durability. Each contrast level has ETDRS style letters and
Continuous Reading Examples. This new test provides additional capabilities compared to the Holladay Functional Acuity Contrast
Test (F.A.C.T.™), which is currently unavailable.
The ETDRS style lettering employed in the Richmond test provides excellent repeatability and is an objective measure useful for
medical insurance submission. The continuous text at each contrast level provides a “real world” example to help patients recognize
any decline in low contrast acuity. Use of the test booklet at near (16 inches or 40 cm) is much quicker than repositioning a patient to
use a distance contrast test such as the Pelli-Robson. Since both full contrast and other contrast levels are presented under the
same conditions, the illumination is identical. This permits accurate comparison of the results at the various contrast levels.
Other product features include ETDRS and text shown at 17 levels from 20/400 to 20/10. Acuity measure equivalents are shown in
Snellen feet and meters, LogMAR, decimal and letter size. Pages are tabbed at each contrast level. A score card, recording form
and comprehensive instructions are also provided to support plotting of a graph of the patient’s results indicating the relationship of
visual acuity and contrast sensitivity. Normal ratios are also indicated to permit comparison.

Pediatric Near Contrast Test Booklet

Pediatric Contrast pages show LEA Symbols™ on one
side and Arial Numbers on the other. Overlay template
blocks the acuity measures (Snellen, LogMAR etc.) to
help child concentrate.
Recording form illustrates decreasing
contrast sensitivity in the right eye.
Key Features:
• Contrast Levels 100%, 25%, 10%, 5%, 2.5% and 1.25%
• Full contrast shows 20/400 to 20/10 in 17 increments, other levels show 15 levels
• Shows Optotypes in Snellen Feet and Meters, LogMAR, Decimal and Letter Size
Includes Instructions, Score and Recording Forms plus Answer Key in both
English and Spanish
This is a new Pediatric Near Contrast Test Booklet with a range of contrast sensitivity levels: full contrast (100%), 25, 10, 5, 2.5 and
1.25 percent using Michelson measures. One side of each page provides LEA Symbols™ for testing of 3 to 5 year olds. The other
side shows Arial Numbers for testing 5 to 8 year olds. Near Contrast testing provides an efficient means to detect or track ocular
pathologies, including glaucoma, ARMD, diabetic retinopathy, cataract, and keratoconus. Low contrast acuity loss measurement can
be used to demonstrate progress in disease treatment and help children’s parents understand the need for continued support. We
have included the 1.25% level as recent studies on optic nerve tumors found that the average contrast sensitivity for kids without
tumors was just better than 1%, whereas the contrast threshold for kids with tumors was 2.8%. These results are somewhat
preliminary but inclusion of this lower level is advisable. The use of the clinically tested LEA Symbols™ and Arial Numbers insures
testing with a narrow acuity threshold for acuity level and pediatric age group.
This new Pediatric test is comparable to the adult Holladay Functional Acuity Contrast Test (F.A.C.T.™), which is currently
unavailable. It is also complementary with our Adult Near Contrast Test. This Pediatric test is used at near (16 inches or 40 cm)
which makes it much more likely to hold the attention of young patients. Administration is quicker than repositioning a patient to use
a distance contrast test such as the (adult only) Pelli-Robson. Since both full contrast and other contrast levels are presented under
the same conditions, the illumination is identical. This permits accurate comparison of the results at the various contrast levels.
LEA Symbols™ and Arial Numbers at full contrast are presented 20/400 to 20/10 in 17 increments. The other contrast levels are
presented in 15 levels 20/400 to 20/16. The “slip-over template” can be used to block the acuity measures thus simplifying what the
child sees. Optotype sizes are listed in Snellen feet and meters, LogMAR, decimal and letter size for each line. The template helps
focus the child’s attention on the test lines at hand. Score card, recording form, answer key and comprehensive instructions are also
provided to support plotting of a graph with the child’s results indicating the relationship of visual acuity and contrast sensitivity.
Normal ratios are also indicated to permit comparison. The booklet is printed on high-quality styrene plastic for long-term durability.
