Aug 29 , 2106 Newsletter Issue - 3 Dragon Newsletter Dear SMS Family, A Message From Our Principalsuccessful Thank you for contributing in having a first week of school . I know this will continue to be the case for the entire school year. Thank you to all the teachers that have implemented the Caring Classroom Initiative components. If you still need to implement any of those components, please do so as soon as possible. Let’s give our students an additional reason to want to be in your class; let’s give our students an additional reason to love our school. During this past week, you had the opportunity to get familiarized with your new students, practice routines, implement strategies and best instructional practices. We also held PLC, department, grade level, and staff meetings, where we shared information and expectations, and planned and discussed academic projections. All these efforts and practices will help us in ensuring the academic success of our students. Often times administrators, concentrated on students’ academic scores and school ratings, fail to acknowledge and recognize the importance and the impact teachers and faculty members make on the academic and social success of our students. We educators don’t just come to “work” every day. There are personal goals, problems, physical conditions, feelings, issues at home, and many factors that determine our level of performance as educators, but we are still here, in the trenches, making things happen. I am with you on this. Not only do I appreciate your contributions to this project, our project, but I give the credit to you, and take none; without you, no success of any kind would be possible. Thank you for your commitment to our students and our community. I promise I will work tirelessly shoulder to shoulder with you to attain our goals. Thank you to all the teachers that are ready to do a great job on Monday and for the rest of the week. Thank you to all the teachers that showed up on Saturday to work on whatever they thought they needed to be ready for Monday. Excellence does not come from heaven. Excellence is achieved with the implementation of best practices in everything we do in a consistent fashion. Please allow me to cite my favorite quote in reference to excellence: "We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence then, is not an act, but a habit" -Aristotle Let’s continue to work on Compliance-->Commitment-->Excellence. Get ready, be strong... Seagoville Strong! Javier Chaparro, SMS Principal Dragon Newsletter GETTING TO KNOW OUR STAFF: CARL GEIGER 1998, I graduated from Texas A & M Commerce, lost as to what I was going to do with my life. The Graduate Assistant position with the Intramural Department I was going to take the next fall was dissolved due to budget cuts. My plans to use the positions to continue working with the track & field team and stay at the university level were lost. What am I going to do? Do I still want to coach? I enrolled that fall at UTD to teaching courses and received my certification the following fall. During the spring of 1999 I accepted a long term substitute assignment at John B. Hood Middle School with 8 weeks left in the school year as a 6th teacher. The first was out due to medical concerns. I’ll never forget one of the comments a student said to me the first week, “We’ll run you off too.” Day 7 of the assignment our principal, and our dean of instruction, knock on my door asking to speak with me. I step out into the hallway. “I hear you got a degree in History.” “Yes sir” I said; “do you want a job?” “Yes sir” I replied. “Fill out this paperwork” (this was my first job interview) After about 3 years I realized, I was a good teacher and started getting involved with the school versus it being an 8-4 job. With much encouragement from friends and family I enrolled at the University of North graduated in 2006 with my Masters in Education Administration. My next stop landed me at Lakeview Centennial, Garland ISD as an Administrative Intern or Assistant Principal on teacher pay. This is where I learned that an AP is the best job in education. You get to work first hand with teachers and students. The most unique school district I served with was Dallas County Juvenile Justice Charter Schools, Henry Wade Building, as an Interim Principal. Thinking I wanted a change I joined the Army. For the next 4 years I worked as a Behavioral Health Specialist at Darnell AMC. I worked in an inpatient psychiatric ward, triage and restorative clinic, and drug and alcohol outpatient clinic and taught various classes to civilians and military personnel from LTC to PVT. I did not work a standard Monday – Friday work week; on my days off I substituted for Killeen ISD. People asked why I gave up my days off, my only answer was “it’s what fun to me is.” Joining the Army reinforced I am an educator. This is my 3rd year with Seagoville MS teaching Texas History. I’ve participated on many committees and help out in whatever capacity I can.
