Homework: Impact of Earthquake
Board due 11/4 (A) & 11/7 (B)
Warm Up 22:
1. Choose the right word for
this sentence: The core is
more/less dense than the
crust. Explain your answer.
2. Which type of rock forms
underground from extreme
heat and pressure?
Metamorphic Rock
• Forms when existing rock is
exposed to high heat, high
pressure, or both.
• Examples: marble and gneiss
• Usually happens deep in Earth
and at plate boundaries.
Marble
Igneous Rock
• Forms when melted rock
(magma/lava) cools and hardens
• Examples: granite and pumice
• When an igneous rock is intrusive
(cools below Earth’s surface) it has
large crystals. When it is extrusive
(cools above ground) it has small
crystals.
Pumice
Sedimentary Rock
• Forms when layers of sediment
build up over time and are
pressed together from the weight
of the layers.
• Examples: limestone and
sandstone
• Sedimentary rock has layers
Sedimentary Rock
• Weathering- breaks rocks into
sediment (small pieces of rock)
• Erosion- moves sediment usually
by wind or water
• Deposition- drops sediment
Sandstone
