The Penguin.
What is a penguin?

Penguins are a type of flightless bird.

They are also aquatic and have flipper-like
wings.

They have a unique shape that keeps them
safe when swimming in the water. This shape
is called described as a “tuxedo” shape.

Although most people think they are located
at the North Pole, they are actually located
in the southern hemisphere of the World.
These two penguins have an animation on them. (Fly In)
Behaviour.

Penguins are social birds.

They like doing things in groups.

Male and female penguins look the same.

Penguins tell each other apart by their sounds.

They live on the land and scavenge for food in the ocean.

They use their stomachs to toboggan on icy slopes.
Population

There are in total 17 different species of
penguins.

The top populated species are:

1.
Macaronni Penguin (18,000,000 to 23,000,000)
2.
Chinstrap Penguin (15, 000, 000)
3.
Adeli Penguin (4,931,600 )
The species with the lowest population is the
Galapagos Penguins (3,000 and 8,000 birds)
Location

There are no penguins in the Northern
Hemisphere.

The northernmost location penguins are
found are the Galápagos penguins. They
are located right below the equator.

Some are are located in the coldest places
on the Earth

Others live on southern coasts of New
Zealand, South America, Africa and
Australia.
Diet

The fish have a custom animation.
Penguins eat aquatic things

Fish

Shrimp

Krill

Penguins that live more north
tend to eat more fish. Southern
penguins eat more shrimp and
krill.

They are able to drink salt water
because of a speial gland they
have.
Mating

Penguins are monogamous. Once they choose a
mate, they are mates forever.

Mating season depends on the species but it is
usually in the spring/summer.

There are different mating rituals penguins do.

For the Gentoo penguins Females make a nest of
pebbles and sit on top.


Males search through the female nests in search of the
smoothest pebble.

The male then hands the pebble to the female. If she
accepts it they become mates.
Emperor Penguins give out calls to one another.

If a female can’t hear a males call, it is likely she will
not mate with him.
I drew this pebble nest.
Offspring
Most Penguins
Emperor Penguins

Penguins lay two eggs.


Both males and females have
incubation duties.
Emperor and Kind penguins lay one
egg.


Shifts lasts days and sometimes
weeks.
Male Emperor penguins do all the
incubation.

Females look for the food.

Once they are hatched, males feed
the chick with “penguin milk”.

“penguin milk” isn’t really milk,
it’s an excretion from the males
esophagus.

Incubation takes a month to 66
days
Threats

13 out of the 17 species of penguins are
endangered.

This is due to..

Commercial fishing

Oil dumping

Climate change

Also the presence of humans have

Humans have introduced new predators to the
penguins habitats (dogs, cats, etc.)
