Transportation During the British Industrial Revolution Karen Lin After coal mining was established steam engines were invented. The first successful steam engine that was made during the British Industrial Revolution was made by Thomas Newcomen and his partner John Calley. Then later James Watt improved it to become the best. Due to these inventions many transportations were invented with this concept, such as steam­powered boats and steam­powered trains. Also during the british industrial revolution the choices of transportation was increased which was more efficient. Steam­powered trains were one of the most important of the inventions. There steam trains were used for transportation of humans and goods. Since it took less time for it to travel from one place to another it was one of the most used transportations. In 1801, a british engineer named ​
Richard Trevithick made the first steam­powered train for passengers. It was called the “Puffing Devil” or “Puffer”. However, the Puffing Devil was quite dangerous to used. However, it was versatile in a way because it could be used in many different ways such as pulling coal out of the mines, ships and steam locomotives. Then finally in 1804 he built his last Steam­powered train;​

Following his inventions there was another engineer named George Stephenson started working on the steam locomotives as well. Before his invention of steam­powered trains he improved the railway tracks stronger. Then later on in 1825, the steam powered train called the ‘Locomotion’ took 450 people from Darlington to Stockton which is 13 miles away. It traveled 15 miles per hour. Later he then developed is last and best model called the Rocket. It was improved to travel 35 miles per hour. These steam­powered trains burn on coal as a fuel. The coal is burned causing the boiler full of water to make steam. The steam then travels into the piston and causes a in and out motion also known as reciprocating. Then this moves the wheels that are fixed onto each other so it moves at the same time. “​
The first steam locomotive to run in America, was shipped from Britain. Called the Stourbridge Lion, it was ordered for the purpose of transporting coal.” (​

, 2015). Since the train Stourbridge Lion was shipped to America it shows that Britain at that time was developing very quickly and was very advanced. Steam­powered boats was or still is one of the major inventions in history. It was the first machine that was able to turn heat into energy. Thomas Newcomen helped in developing a steam­powered ship. He built the first engine for ships. However, his engine was too big to fit into boats. But it allowed the inventors later to figure out how to make a engine. The first person that was involved with inventing the steam­powered ships was William Symington. William Symington is a British engineer who helped invent the steam­powered boats. His most successful ship was a steam paddle boat called the ​
Charlotte Dundas.​
This ship was the first practical steam ship in history. Her source of fuel was coal like the other steam­powered trains. The mechanism is the same as the steam­powered trains. However, instead it has a paddle. It sailed down Forth­Clyde canal carrying passengers. Later, another engineer named named Robert Fulton made a larger paddleboat with the same concept but shipped it to America. The ship that Robert Fulton created was able to travel long distances and was successful. Later, his designs were used to create more. Then in 1812, Henry Bell a Scottish engineer built a small steam ship called the ‘​

using the same concept but with a smaller engine. Steam­powered boats also burn coal in order to move. It boils the water and then the steam pushes the piston and spins the paddle rod which spins the paddle wheel. As it paddles it pushes the water so it moves forward. Canals were also very important to the british industrial revolution. It moved large objects over long distances. Canals are man made rivers. They made them by digging for miles and making sure it was deep enough so the ships can sail through. It took about 2 years to fully complete making the canal. The person that was most involved in making canals at that time was the Duke of Bridgewater. He needed the canal to transport the coal from a mine in Lancashire to a market in Manchester. It was completed in 2 years. However, it took a lot of money and time. By making the canal goods were able to be taken to places faster than it was before. It was large and extended for many miles across cities. It was the most closest route to ship large amounts of coal to different destinations. During the british industrial revolution many inventions were invented. This helped lead to modern technology such as electric boats and trains. The inventions also helped with migration of people during that time allowing them to travel far distances and trade, study or just simply visiting other countries.
