House brick wrapped in tape so it doesn’t scratch the fire door as it holds it open How not to use a fire extinguisher “The fire door was really hard to hold open, so my husband made this really heavy wedge for it” Copyright Fire Safety Net Ltd 2009 www.firesafetynet.co.uk Holes Made in Fire Resisting Walls A solid fire resisting wall can easily be made useless by breaking a hole in it, most often this is done to your building by electricians, cable routers and plumbers Oil tank store in a boiler house. A doorway made so someone can store his bike and pressure washer! A hole put in the wall for ventilation in a freezer room overlooks the fire escape! Copyright Fire Safety Net Ltd 2009 www.firesafetynet.co.uk Storage in Fire Escape Stairs In a building with only one staircase, it is your only way out in a fire. If combustible materials are stored in the staircase and the fire starts there, you have had it! Copyright Fire Safety Net Ltd 2009 www.firesafetynet.co.uk Poor Housekeeping Poor housekeeping inevitably leads to fires, that’s why fire service inspectors rate it so highly in their risk matrix! Copyright Fire Safety Net Ltd 2009 www.firesafetynet.co.uk Obstructed Call Points In the event of a fire raise the alarm by breaking the glass…. But what if you can’t find it! Copyright Fire Safety Net Ltd 2009 www.firesafetynet.co.uk Storage on and Around Heaters Heaters should be guarded and no combustible material stored close by. The first picture shows gym mats in a school stored against and on top of the heater! Copyright Fire Safety Net Ltd 2009 www.firesafetynet.co.uk Electricity Multi adaptors plugged into multi adaptors plugged into …. If cable reels are used when the cable is wrapped around the drum, the cable acts a bit like the filaments on an electric fire and gets hotter and hotter Combustible materials stored close by high voltage equipment Copyright Fire Safety Net Ltd 2009 www.firesafetynet.co.uk Electricity Yet more multi adaptors plugged into multi adaptors plugged into …. If metal rods and cable etc are stored in this fashion against high voltage equipment you can easily get arcs and sparks Copyright Fire Safety Net Ltd 2009 Poor quality electrical installation with a mass of cables and poor connections in a damp environment. Perfect for short circuits! www.firesafetynet.co.uk Cooking I know they look like staged photographs but both of these were found in schools! Poor positioning Copyright Fire Safety Net Ltd 2009 Not a great place to store your cleaning materials! www.firesafetynet.co.uk Flammable Liquid Storage Flammable liquids should be stored in a secure cabinet that is “bunded” to stop leaks escaping and liquids free flowing across the floor looking for an ignition source! Copyright Fire Safety Net Ltd 2009 www.firesafetynet.co.uk LPG Cylinders Storage LPG cylinders should be stored in a secure cage located outside. They are a great target for arsonists if they are insecure Half right!! Copyright Fire Safety Net Ltd 2009 www.firesafetynet.co.uk Poor Storage Copyright Fire Safety Net Ltd 2009 www.firesafetynet.co.uk Just too close! Portable heaters are a common cause of fires as they can be inadvertently knocked and moved to be too close to combustible materials. They should be fixed and guarded so they stay where you want them to be! Copyright Fire Safety Net Ltd 2009 How not to use fire guards! www.firesafetynet.co.uk Fire Exit Signs Fire Exit signs should be unobstructed and easy to see. As you can see on the first two photographs when the blinds are down the fire exit signs disappear!! The fire exit signs in this supermarket were stuck to the emergency lights so unless you were directly underneath them and looking up….. Copyright Fire Safety Net Ltd 2009 www.firesafetynet.co.uk Fire Exit Signs To meet the current standard all fire exit signs must be white on a green background and include the running man symbol. Home made signs are not acceptable. Copyright Fire Safety Net Ltd 2009 www.firesafetynet.co.uk Exposed foam in furniture The covering material is an integral part of the “fire safety” of foam when used in furnishings, when it is missing or ripped the level of risk increases dramatically. The above seating was found in offices and a pub. Such furniture would require professional repair or should be replaced.
