Introduction to the purpose of mapping CIPS
units into the Shell competency framework
CIPS has undertaken a mapping exercise to show how its qualification units fit directly into the Shell Competency Framework.
The table below indicates the fit into Shell’s key area of expertise, indicates the key building blocks utilised within the framework and then
the skills element required in order to fulfil Shell’s required competency levels for those involved in procurement activities at different levels.
The key building blocks can be seen within the diagram below, which include:
• Strategic Supply Chain Expertise
• Acquisition and Execution Expertise
• Inventory Management Expertise
• Logistics Expertise

Each of the CIPS unit headings are shown in red across the top of each page of the mapping diagram directly linked to the key area of
expertise and underneath each of those are the associated building blocks shown in light blue.
Within the Supply Chain Academy, when you click on the building blocks, you will see the skill element most closely associated with
each CIPS unit and those which will most help you to prepare for undertaking the study of CIPS units.
CIPS has also indicated pre-requisite learning from within the Supply Chain Academy that directly relates to each key area of expertise
and the building blocks. This links directly with the mapping document that you will see.

Management in the
Purchasing Function
Within the various areas of the
Shell CP Framework, there is a
wealth of information relating to
purchasing activities. However,
an emerging theme in the
market place is the necessity to
not only managing purchasing
but to be able to manage the
entire purchasing function.
To this end there is no direct link
between the Shell CP
Framework and the CIPS
Framework. This is in essence
new learning.
