THE GLOBE SPEAKS
Creating a Dramatic Monologue
A Webquest for Year 11 Literature
Created by Mrs Chong
Introduction
A dramatic monologue is a piece of writing in which the person on stage is talking, often to
an imagined listener or audience.
The Task
You will need to write and record a monologue from the perspective of The Globe Theatre,
talking as though he/she was a real character. You must use the monologue to provide as
much information about Shakespeare and the history of The Globe Theatre, but you should
do so in an entertaining and engaging way.
The Process
Step 1:
Planning – consider these questions and make notes in your exercise books.
 What kind of character is The Globe? Man or woman? Arrogant or humble? In awe of
Shakespeare or not too keen on him?
 What thoughts and feelings might The Globe be keen to express?
 What secrets might The Globe know?
 What do you think The Globe made of the typical Shakespearian audience?
 What kind of language might The Globe use? What tone of voice?
 Does The Globe know why it is a globe shape?
 Consider the structure of the monologue: what different topics might The Globe talk
about?
Step 2:
Carry out your research on Shakespeare and The Globe. Use the links provided at the end of
this document. You may use other resources to support your ideas.
Step 3:
Write your monologue and practise delivering your monologue. You will need to produce a
recording of your monologue in an mp3 file.
Your monologue must:
 be type-written in Arial/Times New Roman font size 12;
 have your name and class in the top right hand corner of the first page;
 be between one to two pages in length (maximum 2 pages);
 fulfil the requirements of the task;
 submitted to me upon your return to school;
 recorded in mp3 format and submitted to me in a flashdrive with your typed
document. Your file must be clearly labelled with your name.
Evaluation
Your project will be evaluated out of 30 marks (written monologue – 20 marks, recording –
10 marks) and included in the marks
