Director’s Notes This production brings to an end the theatre season for 2005-2006. We will look back fondly on this year as a “championship season,” due in great part to the presence of two individuals who will be leaving us in the spring. The first is Michael Orman, our Technical Director. This is a vague position with a wide range of responsibilities. The executive summary is that the Technical Director is responsible for giving concrete physical shape to the dreams of the director and designer. Michael has helped us to dream large, and it has been an honor to work with him this year. The second is Harry Weber, who is teaching both theatre and art this year. Harry is, more than anyone else, responsible for the show you will see tonight. He provided the inspiration to choose the show, consulted on which poems to present, and worked with us during rehearsals. He also provided most of the cast from his 9th grade theatre classes, forcing them to audition through some combination of coaxing and threats that I still don’t entirely understand (and probably don’t want to!) Spoon River Anthology was written by Edgar Lee Masters in 1915 as a series of epitaphs for the tenants of a cemetery in a small Illinois town based on Lewistown, Illinois, where Masters grew up. In these poems, Masters presents the regrets, the bitterness, the joy and the wisdom of the residents of Spoon River. Each poem is a portrait of a member of the town, and together they create a rich picture of the time and place in which they were written. There is a popular adaptation of Spoon River for the stage by Charles Aidman, but we chose to go back to the poems and create our own version, making this production essentially a world premiere of a new play. It has been an honor to work with this group of young men and women to create this show, and I hope you will enjoy the result of our effort. This play will be performed in one act, without an intermission.
