CHAPTER NINE
HYDROGEN
9.29 What properties of water make it useful as a solvent? What types of compound
can it (i) dissolve, and (ii) hydrolyse ?
Water is called as universal solvent. Water is a good solvent due to its polarity. When an ionic or polar
compound enters water, water molecules surround it. The relatively small size of water molecules
typically allows many water molecules to surround one molecule of solute. The partially negative dipoles
of the water are attracted to positively charged components of the solute, and vice versa for the positive
dipoles. Therefore ionic compounds dissolve due to ion –dipole interaction. The covalent compounds like
sugar , alcohol dissolve in water due to hydrogen bonding.
Water can hydrolyse many metals and non-metallic oxides, hydrides etc.example.
CaO +H2O→ Ca (OH) 2
