Miami Celebrates Second Power of 10 Event
Posse Miami held its second Annual
Power of 10 on October 12 at The
Mondrian South Beach. The Power of 10
is a unique celebration of diversity, equity
and leadership in higher education and
the workforce. This event is held in every
Posse city during the month of October
and celebrates the power of 10 Scholars
fulfilling the Posse mission and persisting
and graduating at an extraordinary rate
from top-tier colleges and universities. Posse

100 members of the Posse Miami family,
including Alumni, corporate partners,
individual supporters and honored guests.
The night showcased the promise of Posse
being realized in Miami.
“Greenberg Traurig was proud to
support The Posse Foundation Power of
10 event that was recently held in Miami
Beach, Florida at the Mondrian Hotel,”
says Sabrina Ferris, a litigation shareholder
at Greenberg Traurig, P.A. and a Posse
Miami Advisory Board member. “This
was a wonderful opportunity for Posse to
introduce its program to local community
leaders and for attendees to truly understand
the power of Posse and the incredible impact
that this organization has on the future of
those students participating in the program.
Several of our attorneys have volunteered
their time serving as mentors or board
members of this organization, and they have
all found their experiences to be incredibly
rewarding.”
The Power of 10 was also proudly
sponsored by KPMG. “Through our support
of this great celebration and The Posse
Foundation, we reinforce our commitment

to help provide our outstanding youth with
transformational educational and career
opportunities and actively participate
in shaping the future leadership of our
community,” said Posse Miami Advisory
Board member Jean-Pierre Trouillot,
partner at KPMG’s Transaction Services.

Mount Holyoke Scholar Scores Grant for Green Initiatives
resources each group had to offer in terms
of ideas and outreach and continued to
build upon that.”
Mount Holyoke Posse 1 Scholar
Jazmin Locke has a lot to be excited
about. Majoring in environmental studies
with a minor in nonprofit organizations,
Jazmin’s summer internship at Catalyst
Miami allowed her to further her passion
for environmental sustainability while also
affording her the opportunity to lead a grant
application process for the organization.
In October, the U.S. Department of
Agriculture awarded $86,000 to Catalyst
Miami, and several other organizations, as
a result of Jazmin’s efforts.
I hope to help stimulate
the shift towards a more
sustainable, healthy world.

The Farmers Market Promotion Grant
will fund a city-wide outreach plan to bring
fresh food to places that do not have access
to it within a five- to 10-mile radius. The
impetus for this grant is grounded in the
existence of seven major “food deserts” in
Miami where residents lack access to fresh,
local food and obtain the majority of their
meals from convenience and corner stores.
As such, Jazmin attended the Health
Foundation Grantee Luncheon at the
beginning of last summer and began
fostering relationships with members of
the nonprofit farmers market and urban
farm project community.
“I interviewed each organization
to understand the types of issues they
were having, and the main concern was
that people were not coming out to these
markets,” says Jazmin. “After sharing the

idea, I asked if people would be interested
in working as a group on this grant to
receive money to do educational outreach
all across the county which would benefit
everyone. The idea resonated, so my
supervisor and I helped organize a meeting
that brought everyone together to discuss
what is important to all of us, what we
need, and how we could accomplish it as a
group if we were to receive funding. After
getting everyone to agree to work on this
grant we were able to see what kind of

During her eight-week internship,
Jazmin focused her portion of the grant on
highlighting the critical need to support local
food providers who can supply the healthy
food that is sorely missing in Miami’s food
deserts, bolstering her claims with census
data and local statistics and highlighting the
nutritional landscape of Miami.
Ultimately, Jazmin credits her
experience at Catalyst Miami for
reaffirming her passion for environmental
issues and the impact that nonprofit
organizations can have in shaping the
future. “I believe that creating change
from the bottom up is how anything is
going to be accomplished, and now I have
faith that it is possible and that all I have
to do is get out there and make it happen,”
she says. “My passion lies in bringing out
others’ passion, and I hope by doing that
I can help stimulate the shift towards a
more sustainable, physically and spiritually
healthy world.”
