How Does A Cloud Form?
The Water Cycle, Clouds
Study Guide
Ms. Zozak
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------The process of water changing into vapor is called evaporation. (See the word
vapor in the word evaporation?) (Water is a liquid. Vapor is a gas. These are the
same thing but different stages of matter (different stages of the water))
A rain shadow is a place on the side of a mountain range away from the ocean
where it almost never rains.
When warm, moist air cools, condensation forms clouds.
How can clouds help you predict the weather? Different kinds of clouds are
followed by different weather. Cumulus clouds may produce rain or snow
showers.
If rivers flow into oceans, why don’t oceans overflow?
The oceans do not overflow because water evaporates from them. Condensation
and precipitation spread water from the ocean to many places on land.
Identify the parts of a water cycle on an illustration. Learn these terms:
evaporation, condensation, precipitation, runoff, water vapor,
If you saw a puddle on the sidewalk in the morning and it was gone in the
afternoon on a sunny day, where did the water go? It evaporated.
If water cools and forms visible drops, what would that be called? condensation
What causes precipitation? Water vapor is cooled forming larger, more visible
droplets
Do we have the same amount of water on our planet as we did a million years
ago? yes
Rain, snow, sleet, and hail are examples of what? precipitation
Dew on the grass in the morning is an example of condensation. (The air cooled
and the water vapor in the air condensed and landed on the grass.)
When precipitation occurs and the temperatures are above freezing, what form
of precipitation would you likely see? rain, snow, sleet or hail (rain)
When liquid water evaporates into the air, it becomes a gas known as water
vapor.
If liquid water turns to a vapor (evaporation)
Vapor changes to a liquid (condensation)
Water going back to the ocean (runoff)
Water falling back to earth (precipitation)
