Suggestions for Use
Thank you so much for purchasing this product from my store. I included two versions of headers with
corresponding direction sheets one with self-checking QR codes and one without. The headers and direction
sheet with QR codes are on pages 3-6 and the ones withOUT QR codes are on pages 7-10. Be sure to only
print the pages you’ll need. The cards with the reading passages are on pages 11-14 and the answer key card
is at the very end.
All you need to do to prep this center is cut out and laminate the headers, cards, and direction sheet.
Students should be able to complete this activity independently. If you are using the version with QR codes,
you will need a device that can scan the codes, such as an iPad, tablet, iPod, or laptop/desktop with a camera.
If you have any questions at all about using this product, please don’t hesitate to contact me at
[email protected].

When you breathe in, air moves
through your nose or mouth. Then,
the air travels through your throat to
your trachea. Next, your trachea
divides into two bronchial tubes, which
carry air into your lungs.
Exercise, such as running or biking,
causes muscles to become bigger
and stronger.

The digestive system begins in the
mouth. After food has been chewed
and swallowed, it travels through the
esophagus and into the stomach. The
food then passes to the intestines.
Washing your hands is one of the best
ways to prevent the spread of viral
and bacterial infections.

Your body’s voluntary and involuntary
muscles are constantly at work.
Voluntary muscles are attached to your
bones and move because you decide to
move them. In contrast, involuntary
muscles can’t be controlled and you
usually don’t even know they are
working.
5
The circulatory system is powered by
the heart. Blood leaves the heart in
large vessels called arteries. After
oxygen and nutrients have been
delivered throughout the body, the blood
returns to the heart in thinner vessels
called veins. This circuit is completed up
to three times per minute.
6
The small intestine is as wide as a
finger and about 23 feet long. It is
folded into big loops.
Asthma is a disease that can make
breathing difficult. Many people who
have asthma use an inhaler to treat
their symptoms.

Hearing aids are electronic devices
that people wear to amplify sound.
They are a great solution for
people who have experienced
hearing loss.
Smoking cigarettes can lead to high
blood pressure, rapid heart rate,
and lung cancer.

Arteries and veins are both blood
vessels and considered “highways” of
the body. Arteries carry blood away
from your heart and transport oxygenrich blood. Veins, on the other hand,
carry blood back to the heart and
transport oxygen-poor blood.
11
The spinal cord is about 18 inches
long and runs down your back from
the base of your brain. Along the
way, various nerves branch out to
every part of the body.

Red and white blood cells are both
important components of the blood,
but they have very different
functions. The main job of red blood
cells is to carry oxygen to the body’s
cells. The main job of white blood
cells is to help the body fight disease.
13
When you touch something hot, you
pull your hand away so quickly that
you don’t even think about it. This
reaction is due to your nervous
system, which is your body’s control
system.
Bone marrow is the innermost part
of a bone. It is a soft, spongy
material, and its job is to make
blood cells.
