JOB SPECIFICATION
1.
Summary of the broad purpose of the position in relation to the organisation's goals (its
expected outcome and how it is achieved).
Operate under general policy direction and with a high level of professional independence in the
determination of operational priorities, strategies, work standards and allocation of resources for MRI
Level 6.
Responsible for allocating and determining work priorities of the MRI team rostered to Level 6 to
ensure operational standards and efficiencies are met having regard to the needs of the clients.
Provide professional guidance to Medical Imaging Professionals by developing levels of discipline,
awareness and specialised knowledge within the MRI team Level 6.
Responsible to the Director, Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance to provide a comprehensive MRI
service to cardiac clients.
Demonstrate professional independence and high levels of initiative in undertaking MRI
examinations. Professional guidance will be provided by the Assistant Chief Radiographer – MRI
for development of new general MRI techniques. Professional guidance will be provided by the
Director, Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance for development of new cardiac MRI techniques.

Reporting/Working Relationships (to whom the person reports, staff for whom the
person is responsible, and other significant connections and working relationships within
the organisation).
Reports to the Director, Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance on a day to day basis to ensure the
needs of cardiac MRI clients are met.
Responsible for allocating and determining work priorities of the Level 6 MRI team to ensure
general MRI operational standards and efficiencies are met in conjunction with the Assistant Chief
Radiographer – MRI.
Liaises with the MRI Radiology Consultant and relevant Radiology staff to ensure a comprehensive
1.5 Tesla MRI service is provided to RAH.
Liaises with appropriate nursing and medical staff in the provision of patient care during
examinations.
Advises, in consultation with the Assistant Chief Radiographer – MRI, Radiologists, hospital
medical staff and the referring departments on aspects of the MRI service that affect the hospital and
patients.
Liaises with orderlies regarding the transportation of patients to and from the MRI Unit.
Liaises with administrative staff with respect to the management of radiological procedures.

Special Conditions (such as non-metropolitan location, travel requirements, frequent
overtime, etc.).
May be required to work outside normal working hours.
May be required to participate in a shift roster.
May be rostered to participate in after hours on call work.
Required to wear a Departmental uniform.
May be required to work in other areas of the Department.
May be required to transfer within the Central Northern Adelaide Health Service Region.
A formal performance review will be conducted annually.

Statement of Key Outcomes and Associated Activities. (Group into major areas of

Contribute to the provision of high standard, cost effective MRI service to referred clients by:

Allocating and determining work priorities of the medical imaging team within Level 6 MRI in
conjunction with the relevant medical staff.

Undertaking complex and varied MRI examinations without professional direction subject to
established standards, requiring a very high level of practitioner knowledge.

Applying professional knowledge in selecting and adapting methods best suited to 1.5 Tesla
MRI examinations.

Developing and promulgating crucial information relevant to the Cardiac MRI operations to the
Director, Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance and Assistant Chief Radiographer – MRI.

Ensuring that safety procedures are developed and maintained by all staff within and attending
the Level 6 MRI department.

Liaising with medical, nursing and administrative staff on matters related to MRI procedures.

Demonstrating professional independence involving routine research in a general operational
context.

Providing a consultancy service or professional advice, in consultation with the Director,
Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance and Assistant Chief Radiographer – MRI, to other health
professionals within and outside the hospital, industry representatives and the public on matters
relating to MRI.

Participating in committees, working parties and advisory groups as required.
Professional direction may be required for aspects of work which involve new or sophisticated
techniques or relate to work outside the normal span of activity.
May be required to control and coordinate minor projects within Level 6 MRI.
Contribute to continuous evaluation and improvement of radiology services by:

Demonstrating initiative to analyse and identify opportunities to develop polices/protocols and
operating procedures relevant to Cardiac MRI for medical staff, Medical Imaging
Professionals, nurses, and administrative staff of MRI in regard to clinical practice.

Establishing and maintaining recording systems to accurately reflect the activity of various
aspects of the department, which will enable evaluation of performance leading to
improvement and achievement of best practice standards.

Representing Level 6 MRI in Departmental accreditation activities and quality improvement
programs and contribute to development of relative key performance indicators.
Contribute to effective staff management in the Department by:

Demonstrating leadership within Level 6 MRI and coordinating Medical Imaging Professionals
and Administrative staff.

Ensuring staff are provided with adequate training to ensure the department goals and clients
needs are met.

Being responsible for the development of MRI safety programs and regular safety updates and
presentations applicable to Level 6 MRI for all relevant hospital staff.

Assessing and reviewing the standards of clinical cardiac work of other Medical Imaging
Professionals within the Level 6 MRI unit.

Coordinate workflow in conjunction with Director, Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance, MRI
Staff Specialist and Supervisor MRI (Level 2).

Undertaking staff appraisals as part of the Department’s staff appraisal program and developing
staff development programs for relevant staff within MRI.
Contribute to administrative, budgetary and equipment requirements of the Department by:

Assessing professional, technical and economic impacts of projects pre and post
implementation for Level 6 MRI to advise the Director, Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance
and Assistant Chief Radiographer – MRI.

Contributing to relevant operational policies/procedures for Level 6 MRI.

Ensuring the correct recording of patient information, including patient billing information, and
the timely completion of examinations and administrative functions in the Cardiology and
Radiology Information System.

Implementing the service, repair and maintenance of MRI equipment in conjunction with the
Assistant Chief Radiographer – MRI, and acting as an initial trouble shooter should problems
arise.

Ensuring adequate supplies of ancillary equipment and consumables are available for the
provision of the service.

Participating in the preparation of equipment replacement programs and the redevelopment of
services.

Developing and maintaining quality control procedures for equipment.
Contribute to a client focused approach in the provision of clinical care by:

Maximising the participation of consumers in planning and evaluating MRI services.

Adhering to and supporting practices that ensure client’s rights are respected.

Investigating and addressing client complaints in a positive, constructive manner and
developing/proposing change in work practices where necessary .

Contribute to the adoption of responsive risk management practices by:

Undertaking regular risk assessments within Level 6 MRI in conjunction with departmental risk
managers.

Reporting sentinel events, potential medical negligence claims and adverse patient incidents.

Initiating risk assessment following near miss or adverse incidents.
Contribute to the provision of a safe, healthy and equitable work environment by:

Providing staff with the necessary information, instruction, training, and supervision to
effectively and safely carry out their work.

Carrying out responsibilities as detailed in occupational health, safety and injury management
policies and procedures, including reporting all staff accidents, incidents and near misses.

Implementing and monitoring relevant OHS&IM policies and procedures within their work
area and maintaining relevant OHS&IM documentation.


PERSON SPECIFICATION
ESSENTIAL MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
EDUCATION:



Statement of Accreditation in Diagnostic Radiography from the Australian Institute of
Radiography, or its recognised equivalent.
Licensed under the Radiation Protection and Control Act SA (1982)
Relevant approved cardiac training
PERSONAL ABILITIES/APTITUDE/SKILLS:






Demonstrated high level clinical skills in Cardiac Magnetic Resonance Imaging.
Demonstrated effective communication and interpersonal skills.
Ability to operate effectively in a climate of competing priorities within a multidisciplinary team.
Ability to motivate and manage staff, and to delegate as appropriate.
Demonstrated pro-active team behaviour.
Flexibility in general attitude and willingness to accept and implement change.
EXPERIENCE:



Clinical experience in MRI, preferably in a range of hospital environments and incorporating
training.
Proven experience in cardiac MRI techniques and research.
Experience in managing staff and working within a multi-disciplinary team
KNOWLEDGE:
 Knowledge of clinical teaching techniques.
 Knowledge of quality control procedures and theory.
 Knowledge of best practice in Radiology.
 Specialised knowledge of advanced Magnetic Resonance Imaging techniques.
 A knowledge of legislation relevant to the Department including policies relating to Occupational
Health, Safety and Welfare, Equal Employment Opportunity, radiation safety and personnel
management.
DESIRABLE REQUIREMENTS
EDUCATION:

Relevant postgraduate studies.


Australian Institute of Radiography Certificate of Accreditation MRI Level 2.
Affiliation/participation with a professional organisation.
PERSONAL ABILITIES/APTITUDE/SKILLS:

Ability to participate in and develop, implement and review operational policy.
EXPERIENCE:

Experience in managing a section within an Imaging Department.
KNOWLEDGE:

Possess an awareness of current technological and management trends and their possible
implementation in the Department.
