Orthodontic Braces Before you get orthodontic braces, talk your dentist so see which type is the best for you. Remember, each dentist has his or her own opinion, so get a second opinion just to see all the option open to you. and What you need to know about them The most important thing to remember about getting braces is that having braces is a normal thing to have. Even actors like tom cruise, have had braces so it is completely normal. Copyright 2006 David Lin Why do I need braces? In a perfect mouth, the top front teeth extend over the lower teeth slightly and the molars meet while all the teeth are straight. Any deviation from this is called malocclusion, or bad bite. Malocclusion can range from teeth being crooked, crowded, and turned or having an over or under bite. As a result, your teeth may be worn down and chipped, cause you more problems. Your teeth may also be more prone to cavities, gum infections, and even tooth death. Orthodontic Braces are used to correct the misaligned teeth to their proper position. There are 4 main types of orthodontic braces for you to choose from: -Metal Braces -Clear Ceramic Braces -Damon 3 Braces -Invisible Braces (Invisalign®) Each type has its own advantages and disadvantages. Metal Braces These metal brackets are made from stainless steel. They are cemented to your teeth and an arch wire is attached in order to mold your teeth. This method is the oldest method in use, and has been proven very reliable. However, metal brackets used to hold the arch wires stand out on the white teeth background. Clear Ceramic Braces Ceramic braces are brackets made of composite materials that have the same color as your teeth. This means that the brackets are harder to see, and the braces are less visible. However, ceramic brackets are less strong compared to metal brackets, and may be unable to withstand some types of treatments. In addition, the arch wires are still visible. Damon 3 Braces These brackets used in the Damon 3, is a mixture of clear material and stainless steel. These brackets are less visible than metal brackets, and have the benefit of having a metal locking mechanism. This allows for increased tension in the arch wire, which can shorten the amount of time one needs to wear braces. Invisible Braces Invisible braces are made of clear plastic aligners. The aligners are worn over your teeth and they slowly move your teeth to their proper position. In addition, because the aligners are clear, no one can see that you are wearing braces. In addition, the aligners are removable for brushing your teeth and eating, so life progresses normally. Unfortunately, realignment of your teeth depends on wearing the aligners. In addition, invisible braces can not correct all malocclusions. The biggest disadvantage is the fact that invisible braces cost 2-3 times as much as metal braces.
