



Different factors affect solubility rates.

VOCABULARY
1. Solubility – the quality of a particular substance that can dissolve in a particular solvent
2. Ion – an atom or molecule that has an electric charge because it has either gained or
lost electrons
3. Acid rain – air pollution caused when acid components are incorporated into rain, snow,
fog, or mist
Unit 9 – Microorganisms




Viruses and cells differ in structure. Viruses require the machinery of the cell to
reproduce. Viral reproduction results in the death of the host cell.
Bacteria help maintain homeostasis both within other organisms and the environment.
Some bacteria disrupt homeostasis resulting in disease.
Organisms can be classified to this kingdom taxon using broad characteristics, such as
cell type, cell structure, and modes of nutrition.

1. Pathogen – any agent that causes disease
2. Antibiotic – a compound that kills or inhibits the growth of certain microorganisms such
as bacteria
3. Vaccine – a weakened or mild form of a pathogen developed to produce immunity
