A Guide to Pilgrims
Therapy Centres
Wellbeing and Social Programme
There’s a misconception of hospices
as being frightening places, but now
I have experienced it for myself I will have
absolutely no hesitation in coming back
if I need more support.
Tony
I had always thought of hospices as
only being for those who needed
care at the very end of life but I could not
have been more surprised. I’ve had access
to support services, complementary
therapies and social activities. I feel more
balanced and safe.
Shelagh
Dad first came to the hospice just six
months after being diagnosed because
he needed expert help. They were able to
give him the right support to help to keep him
independent. The care for our family didn’t
end there, we were all offered support too.

Advance care planning: Planning for the Future
When you have a life limiting illness, it is
important to consider your preferences
for future care and share these wishes
with friends, family and the healthcare
professionals involved. This process,
known as ‘Advance Care Planning’,
helps you plan for end of life and
supports you to live well in the moment.

Carers Programmes
If you are a carer of a hospice patient,
Pilgrims Carers programmes are
designed to support you with the
practical and emotional issues you
may experience.
Many people who give unpaid care or
support for a friend or family member
approaching the end of life do not think
of themselves as a carer, but the support
you provide is vital.
Caring can have positive and rewarding
aspects, at the same time there are lots
of reasons why caring can leave you
needing support.
You may not always consider your
own needs or be aware of the help
that’s available.
At Pilgrims we recognise that carers
play an essential role in the journey of
our patients and believe you should be
supported throughout this.
If you would like to attend one of the
carer programmes but may worry about
the person you care for being on their
own turn to page 20 for details of how
we can help with this too.

the group means a lot to me.

Carers Wellbeing
This group aims to reduce the sense of isolation of
being a carer. It offers a supportive environment for
you to discuss and explore how it feels to be a carer.
We look at how caring can affect your emotions and
mood. The sessions also focus on the importance
of self care and gives you some techniques to try
to reduce the impact of caring on your own health
and wellbeing.

Bereavement Groups
Although grieving is a natural response to the death
of someone close, it can by very distressing and
traumatic. Many people need extra support to get
through this time. Our Bereavement Groups offer
support for the whole family and close friends of
those who have died while receiving end of life care
from Pilgrims.
Supported groups allow people to talk about feelings
and share experiences in a confidential setting. We
also find people benefit a great deal from meeting
others going through a similar experience.

The first step – talk
to your GP
Selecting the right
programme for you
The first step is to talk
to your GP or healthcare
professional. They can
advise if you are at the
appropriate stage of
your illness to access
the service.
Everyone’s needs
are different so we
encourage you to talk this
through with your GP or
healthcare professional to
find the right support for
you. The Pilgrims team
can also help by looking
at your individual needs
once the referral has
been made. What happens next?
Once we have received
a referral you will be
contacted by a member
of the Pilgrims Therapy
Centre team to discuss
the next steps. At this
stage you will be able
to ask further questions.
“I had to experience Pilgrims services to see what was offered
and it’s changed my point of view. I’m not treated as though
I’m fragile because of my illness – I’m treated as an individual.”

Can you help?
At Pilgrims Therapy Centres located
at our three main hospice buildings in
Canterbury, Ashford and Thanet. How do I get to the Pilgrims
Therapy Centre?
Most patients and carers arrange their
own transport wherever possible. If you

drivers who may be able to help. Please
discuss this with us as soon as possible,
especially if you have difficulty getting
in and out of a car.
Is there free parking?
Yes there is free parking at each site.

I may need help with some aspects
of personal care while I am attending
Pilgrims Therapy Centre. Can someone
help me?
Our team will be available to support your
needs while you are with us.
