What is and invasive species?
How do invasive species
affect the native species in a
given community?
• Why are they called “Killer?”
HUMAN IMPACTS ON TERRESTRIAL BIOMES
• Human activities have damaged or
disturbed more than half of the world’s
terrestrial ecosystems.
• Development results in habitat destruction,
because humans eliminate some wildlife
habitats.

HOW DO HUMANS IMPACT TERRESTRIAL BIOMES?
Overhunting
predators for
big game
Pollution and
oil spills
Deforestation
from cut and
burn
techniques and
agriculture
Reclamation:
returning
vegetation to
an area that
has been
mined or
disturbed by
human use
Habitat
restoration:
trying to
rebuild what
was ruined
In this scene from Family Guy, which human impact is happening on
Peter’s CD? How do you know?
TYPES OF SPECIES
• Different types of species
play different ecological
roles in communities.
• Native species: those that
normally live and thrive in a
particular community.
• Nonnative species: those
that migrate or are
deliberately or accidentally
introduced into a
community.
INVASIVE SPECIES
• Invasive species: a nonnative species that is introduced to a
new ecosystem and thrives to the point where native species
are negatively impacted
• Because invasive species are not originally part of the food
web of the environment, they have no natural predators to
control their population.
• As a result, their populations
rapidly expand and take away
resources from other existing
species.

CASE STUDIES OF INVASIVE SPECIES
Read the case study and complete the
chart on your Guided Notes.
You will have 3 minutes to complete
each case study before passing it to the
next person.
 Choose one of the invasive species from the case
study activity.
 Answer the following questions in AP FRQ format
(complete sentences) on a separate sheet of paper.
 This is due at the end of class.
1. How was this species introduced to the United States?
Describe the way its population dispersed through the new
environment.
2. Identify and explain two impacts that this species has had
on its new ecosystem.
3. Describe one method for preventing the spread of this
invasive species.
