Rock Vocabulary!
Igneous Rock: A rock that is formed by magma (melted rock) and cools
Sedimentary Rock: A rock that is formed by pressure
Metamorphic Rock: A rock that is formed by heat and pressure
Lustre: whether and object is shiny or dull
porous: a rock that has air bubbles (they usually IGNEOUS rocks)
permeable: can absorb liquid
split: how easily a rock can break (hammer)
wear: how easily it breaks apart with friction (sandpaper)
compaction: pressure / to squish
cementation: sticking together / gluing together
sedimentation: breaking down into little pieces
sediments: little pieces of broken down rock
biological weathering: breaking down rocks by humans, plants, & animals
chemical weathering: breaking down rocks by chemicals (acid rain)
physical weathering: breaking down the rock by cooling, heating, and wind
erosion: describes the way pieces of weathered rock move about
magma: molten rock
rocks: pieces of Earth’s crust that has 2 or more minerals
minerals: inorganic solids that are natural to our world and when you break
it open, it looks the same.

organic: this is an object that was once alive
inorganic: this is an object that was never alive
fossils: the remains or impressions that are left behind of plants and
animals. Usually found in SEDIMENTARY rocks.
rock cycle: the way earth recycles rocks
crystals: a solid that has a specific pattern made inside. Often sparkly!
