Cold War
Vietnam War
•Vietnam war started when communist North
Vietnam invaded non-communist South
Vietnam.
•United States fought with South Vietnam
because it wanted to stop the spread of
communism.
•Communist North Vietnam won the 20 year
war against South Vietnam.
Korean War
• Started when communist North Korea invaded South
Korea
• Lasted from 1950-1953.
• The United States and United Nation helped South
Korea and the Soviet Union and China helped North
Korea.
• Armistice signed and fighting stopped but because
no treaty signed fighting still continues today.
Bay of Pigs Invasion
• Failed attempt of the United States who sent
Cuban exiles (people who had escaped from
Cuba) back to Cuba in order to overthrow the
Cuban dictatorship of Fidel Castro.
• Cuban exiles were trained by the CIA.
• After the Bay of Pigs Invasion Cuba declared
it was officially a communist government.
Berlin Wall
• The Berlin Wall separated Germany into East and
West Germany.
• West Germany was democratic and East Berlin was
communist.
• Wall went up overnight and separated friends and
family for almost 30 years.
• The wall was put up because so many people were
fleeing to West Berlin because there was more
freedom.
Berlin Airlift
• Lasted from 1948-1949
•The Soviet Union blocked transport of goods
and other needed supplies like medicine and
food from entering West Berlin.
•The United States and the UN flew planes and
dropped these needed supplies into West
Berlin.
Cuban Missile Crisis
•A U.S spy plane spotted nuclear missiles
sites being built on the island of Cuba by
the Soviet Union to threaten the U.S.
•Because Cuba so close to the United States,
U.S wanted the missiles moved if not
moved we would go to war.
•First time Cold War almost turned into a
hot war between the Soviet Union and U.S.
Arms Race
•A competition between the United States
and the Soviet Union to see who was most
powerful and could obtain the most nuclear
weapons.
•America was the first to develop the
atomic bomb and hydrogen bomb.
Space Race
•A competition between the U.S and the Soviet
Union to see who was the smartest and had
the best technology that could get them into
space first.
•The Soviet Union was the first to send a
satellite, dog, and man into orbit.
•The United States was the first to have a man
walk on the moon.
