Where and when did the battle take
place?

The Battle took place in Mississippi, Vicksburg

It was very close to the Mississippi River

The Union army had to cross the Mississippi River to get to their battle

It started on May 18th 1863 and ended on July 4th 1863

That was about 40 days of tough fighting

The Battle of Vicksburg was fought on Confederate like all the other battles of the Civil War
Who were the officers in charge of the
north and The south
General Ulysses S. Grant
General John C. Pemberton

Ulysses S. Grant lead the Union army to the
town of Vicksburg

The Confederates’ commander was John
C. Pemberton

General Ulysses S. Grant was also later
elected as the 18th president

General John C. Pemberton was also a
soldier in the Seminole wars

General Ulysses S. Grant led the Union army
to a victory of the battle

General John C. Pemberton surrendered
and led his army to a defeat
What happened during the battle?

The Union had won the battle only because the South surrendered

Many soldiers fought so there was a lot of blood-shed

North: 77,000 soldiers fought, 4,910 casualties, and 72,090 remaining

South: 33,000 soldiers fought, 32,492 casualties, and 587 remaining

The Confederacy lost the Mississippi River during the battle

It took Ulysses S. Grant two attempts to take Vicksburg
How did this battle impact the war
overall?

One of the effects was that Pemberton had to surrender Vicksburg

This battle determined who deserved the victory of the Civil War



People moved out of their own homes and moved into caves, tunnels, and hills, they had no
clothing no food
People who behaved like this suffered from dehydration and malnutrition
The town of Vicksburg did not celebrate Independence Day for 81 years since they lost the
battle that played a big role in winning the Civil War
Why was the Mississippi river so
important during the war?

Control of the river was an economical factor for both the North and South

The Union used the river to ship their goods to Mexico, Europe and many other foreign countries

The Confederacy used the same way just to ship agricultural goods

A portion of Louisiana west of the Mississippi plus Texas and Arkansas formed the Trans Mississippi
which held manpower and materiel that the rest of the Southern military needed.
How did the fighting effect the
women living in Vicksburg?

In the spring of 1862 women got their first taste of war

While the men fought in the battle women fled the city with their children to live with
acquaintances

During the second attempt when women left the city, Union troops circled the whole city
making it difficult to leave from any direction of the small attacked area
