Solving Linear Systems
Success Criteria
Given a linear system to solve:
1. Be able to simplify the system to put it in an appropriate format.
2. Determine the best method to use to
solve the system.
a) Solve by Graphing: Usually used for
applications comparing two scenarios.
To be successful:
 use an appropriate scale
 use a ruler , pencil
 label: axes, equations scale
. Know 3 methods of graphing lines
Be able to interpret the graph to
state the solution.
b) Solve By Substitution: If one of the
equations is in standard form and one can
be written in a form where "x" or" y" can.
be isolated. (le. If one of the equations has
a variable with a coefficient of I or1.
To be successful:
a) Rewrite one equation to Isolate
"x" or "y's.
b) substitute the new equation into the other equation.
c) Solve for one variable, then substitute
and solve for the other.
c) Solve By Elimination : use when none of
the variables have a coefficient of one.
To be successful:
a) Set up the equations so one of the variables have opposite
coefficients.
b) Add the equations together
to eliminate one variable and
solve for the other.
c) Sub in and solve for remaining variable.
d) Clearly state the solution
(x, y) = ( , ).
e) Be able to check the solution.
