Ultrasound Preps Abdomen NPO 8 hours prior to exam Pelvis NPO 8 hours prior to exam Patient must have a full bladder; Patient must drink 38 to 42 ounces of liquid, preferably water, one hour prior to exam. Do NOT empty bladder until after exam. Gall Bladder NPO 8 – 12 hours prior to exam. No other special preps required for Ultrasound examination. Ct Exam Preps for IV and/or Oral Contrast Abdomen / Pelvis NPO 8 hours prior to exam. Chest NPO 4 hours prior to exam. Head NPO 4 hours prior to exam. Extremities NPO 4 hours prior to exam. Patient may take medications with just enough water to swallow meds. A blood test for BUN & Creatinine must be taken to evaluate levels. Normal Creatinine level is 0.6 to 1.5 mg/dl. Normal BUN level is 8 to 25 mg/100 ml. Cut off for Creatinine level is 1.5 mg.dl No exam preps for Non-Contrast CT examinations. Diabetic Patients & Metformin --Only for IV Contrast Study Diabetic patients who take Metformin should not take it for 48 hours after the exam. Metaformin is available as a generic drug as well as Brand-name formulas and in combination with other drugs. Following is a list of medications that contain Metformin: Glucophage Glucophage XR Fortamet Glumetza Riomet Glucovance Metaglip ActoPlus MET Avandamet Glyberride Janumet Out Patient PO Contrast Study Patient is to drink one bottle of PO contrast before bedtime the night before the exam. One hour before the exam the patient is to drink all but a couple of swallows of a second bottle of contrast. Just before the exam the patient is to finish the last of the second bottle of contrast.
