 Persephone was
born and raised in
Olympus. Demeter
loved her so much
that she wouldn’t let
Persephone go out
of her sight.
Because Zeus was
the King of Gods, he
didn’t have much
time to spend with
his daughter.
Why is Persephone Queen of
the Underworld?
 Persephone didn’t want
to be Queen of the
Underworld, but
because of her beauty,
it caught Hades’
attention.
Down she goes
 Hades thought
that she was so
gorgeous, that
one day, because
of his greed, he
decided to
snatch her and
make her his
queen.
Demeter’s Anger
 Her mother, Demeter,
was so upset when she
lost her daughter, that
she let out her anger on
Earth.
 All of the flowers and
crops died, and the trees
lost their leaves.
Hermes
 Demeter then
asked if anyone
saw Persephone
disappear, and
was told that she
was taken
underground.
She made Zeus
send Hermes,
the messenger of
the gods, down
to hell to retrieve
her.
Persephone’s Mistake
 Pomegranate tree
 Hades had to let
Persephone go, but he
was smart. Before he let
her go, he gave her six
pomegranate seeds, and
she ate them.
 Eating “the food of the
dead” meant that she
had to live there.
The
Compromise
 Zeus declared
that she had to
live in the
underworld for
six months a
year, because she
ate six seeds and
then for the
other months,
she could live on
the surface with
her mother.
Winter
 This is why Earth has it’s
seasons.
 When Persephone is in
hell, Demeter is sad, and
it becomes fall.
 Then, the leaves fall off
the trees, and winter
arrives.
Spring
 Then, when Persephone
comes back to Earth’s
surface, Demeter
becomes happy. Spring
has arrived.
 The flowers sprout from
the ground, and the trees
grow their leaves back.
There are two beliefs about Persephone
eating the pomegranate seeds.
Most people believe that
Persephone was tricked
into eating the
pomegranate by Hades.
Other people say that
Persephone ate the seeds
on purpose so that she
could break away from her
mother.
Homer’s Stories
 The Iliad
 Persephone wasn’t
mentioned in The Iliad.
 The Odyssey
 During the Odyssey,
Odysseus had to go to
hell, home of Hades and
Persephone, to talk to
Teiresias.
 Teiresias was the only
person able to tell
Odysseus how to get
home to Ithaca.
Fun Facts
 Some of Persephone’s
nicknames are Kore and
The Maiden.
 Her name is commonly
derived from pherein or
phonon.
 It means “to bring” or
“cause death.”
Fun Facts
 There was a temple
found in Sozopol that
was dedicated to
Demeter and her
daughter, Persephone.
 Many artifacts and
statues were found in the
ruins.
