 Bruce Peninsula Biosphere Association ECOSYSTEM TECHNICIAN: SEASONAL FULL-­‐TIME Organization: Bruce Peninsula Biosphere Association Location: Various locations across the Bruce Peninsula, Ontario Our Association: The Bruce Peninsula is a core area of the Niagara Escarpment World Biosphere Reserve and has one of the highest concentrations of rare species in all of Canada. The Bruce Peninsula Biosphere Association (www.bpba.ca) is an award-­‐winning, registered charity located in the Municipality of Northern Bruce Peninsula. Incorporated in 2002, we increase local environmental understanding and build its capacity so that our community can fulfill the conservation and sustainable economic development functions of world biosphere reserves. Working in a team environment with program staff, volunteers, and science advisors, the Ecosystem Technician will be involved with two major programs: Six Streams Initiative and Bayside Astronomy. Key Responsibilities: Six Streams Initiative • Deployment of instrumentation to various field sites • Collection of stream water samples • Identifying and mapping tillage drains contributing to stream flow • Maintaining field and automatic sampler equipment • Recording of detailed field observations that will contribute to project development • Project report Bayside Astronomy • Program delivery at all sites under the mentorship of the Dark Sky Committee, including star-­‐themed talks • Program marketing under mentorship of Marketing Committee • Participating in set up and take down of telescopes and program materials Administration • Preparing reports and briefings of activities • Attending staff and project meetings Required Qualifications: •

Education in environmental sciences, physical geography, environmental engineering, ecology, or related science field Physically fit and able to work outdoors in all weather conditions Ability to manage projects with minimal supervision •

Ability to identify and respond to developments and, in consultation with program managers, strategically adapt protocols and procedures to the changing conditions Drivers license and access to vehicle Enthusiastic to develop new skills, learn new information, and comfortable with the use and maintenance of scientific instruments Flexibility to work days (spring and early summer) and evenings (summer) depending on the timing of program needs and conditions at the field sites A passion for being outside in one of the most spectacular areas of Canada Preferred Qualifications: •

Experience with field sampling through education or work experience Project management experience, sound problem solving skills Experience using tools and equipment, such as GPS, Geographic Information System, or stream instrumentation Knowledge of Bruce Peninsula is an asset Knowledge of water chemistry, stream hydrology, and/or astronomy are assets Familiarity with agricultural systems is an asset The position is dependent on funding approval and is anticipated to span from Monday, May 2 to Sunday, September 4, 2016 (40 hrs per week), at $15/hr.
