The Rotorua Pro-Democracy Society Purposes It is a society of citizens incorporated to protect members. The objects of the Society are to promote and advocate representative democracy, ensure the Mayor and Councillors comply with the law about operations, purposes, performance and governance principles, and ensure that Councillors consider the wishes of citizens when deciding policy and that Officials advise Councillors impartially and act to implement Council policy. The Society will give members practical opportunities to promote and defend the democratic rights of all citizens in the Rotorua District, through peaceful, political and legal campaigns. Cleisthenes, the father of Athenian democracy. He and others replaced a tyrannical aristocracy in ancient Athens with the first form of democratic government in 508/7 BC. Organisation The Constitution and Rules of the Society provide for the annual election of a Committee. The Committee comprises a Chairperson, a Secretary, a Treasurer, and five members, with the power to co-opt other members. The Committee manages the Society. The Society website is at http://www.rotoruaprodemocracy.nz/ Membership Citizens on the electoral roll of the Rotorua District who support the objects of the Society are eligible for membership. Other people who believe in the interests and principles of the Society are also eligible for membership. Applicants become members when the Committee approves their application and they pay their subscription. Apply for Membership Complete the form below and mail or email it to the Interim Secretary of the Society for consideration by the Committee. Once the application has been approved by the Committee, the payment of the annual subscription will complete the process. Annual Subscription The Individual Subscription is $20, Family Subscription $30 and the Concession Subscription (for Seniors and Fulltime Students) is $10.
