5th Grade Science Lesson Plans Week 14 Mr. Andreas Gross Monday, December 10, 2012: Standards/Objective: SWBAT demonstrate the ability to understand that the water cycle is influenced by temperature, pressure and topography of land by describing the formation of different clouds. Warm-up: Review the steps and vocabulary associated with the water cycle from last week: Condensation, evaporation, precipitation, sublimation, Sun, clouds Instruction: Which step of the water cycle does cloud formation occur in? What’s the science word for this? Cloud formation influenced by: o Air temperature o Air pressure Air moving up to low pressure often creates clouds Low pressure allows air molecules to expand and cool down Types of clouds o Cirrus = wispy, feathery, made of ice, high altitude o Stratus = dense, low altitude, water vapor (fog is stratus) o Cumulus = puffy, mid to high altitude, water vapor o Thunderhead (cumulonimbus) = powerful upward blasts of air, associated with storms and atmospheric instability o Fog = very low stratus cloud Show brainpop on “Clouds” for reinforcement at this point Guided Practice: o Go through “Guess that Cloud” powerpoint with the students (verbal interactive teacher-student activity) Independent Practice: - Short classwork/pop quiz worksheet on clouds and the water cycle Evaluation: Teacher will collect classwork worksheet for a grade Closure: Tell your shoulder partner about at least two different types of clouds you learned about today. Meeting individual needs: Homework: Read Chapter 7, Lesson 4 Tuesday, December 11, 2012: Standards/Objective: SWBAT demonstrate an understanding of the different forms of precipitation by describing the formation of rain, freezing rain, sleet, hail and snow. Warm-up: What are the different forms of precipitation? Discuss what you know (or don’t know) about each one of the following terms with your shoulder partner o Rain, freezing rain, sleet, snow, hail o Ice crystals up highwarmer air below melts it into water Instruction: Rain Freezing Rain o Ice crystals up highmelt in warmer aircold air close to the ground causes water to freeze when it lands Sleet o Ice crystals up highmelt in thin layer of warm air high above the groundcold air above ground causes rain to freeze before it hits the ground Snow o Ice crystals fall from clouds all the way down in cold air o Strong winds blow upward in a cloud, blowing raindrops back up the cloud and making Hail them freeze again. Get blown over and over, freezing multiple layers of ice until it becomes too heavy and falls to the ground Guided Practice: - Go through “Guess that Precipitation” powerpoint with students Independent Practice: - Student will complete a short worksheet about forms of precipitation near the end of class Evaluation: - Teacher will collect classwork for a grade Closure: Meeting individual needs: Homework: Study for Chapter 7 Test Wednesday, December 12, 2012: Standards/Objective: SWBAT demonstrate an understanding of Chapter 7 concepts by playing a review game. Warm-up: Review directions for “Mr. Gross’s Wonderful World of Trivia” Instruction: Play Trivia Guided Practice: Chapter 7 review game: “Mr. Gross’s Wonderful World of Trivia” Independent Practice: Students will come up with answers to chapter 7 questions on their own for points in the trivia game without teacher assistance Evaluation: Score will be kept for the game – tallying the total number of right and wrong answers give by each team. Closure: Review why we played trivia (to reinforce and review Chapter 7 concepts) Meeting individual needs: Homework: Study for Chapter 7 Test Thursday, December 13, 2012: Standards/Objective: SWBAT demonstrate an understanding of Chapter 7 concepts by reviewing for the Chapter 7 Test (on Friday) Warm-up: Review topics covered in Chapter 7 Instruction: - Guided classwork review packets to complete in class (groupwork) Guided Practice: - Teacher will go over classwork near the end of class to clear up any questions Independent Practice: - Students will work in groups without teacher assistance for the first 15 minutes of classwork time Evaluation: Teacher will check classwork for completion Closure: - Review why we reviewed Chapter 7 (to reinforce chapter concepts for the test tomorrow) Meeting individual needs: Homework: Study for Chapter 7 Test Friday, December 14, 2012: Standards/Objective: SWBAT demonstrate an understanding of Chapter 7 concepts by completing a Chapter 7 Assessment Warm-up: Instruction: Guided Practice: Independent Practice: - Complete Chapter 7 Test individually Evaluation: Chapter 7 Test Closure: Meeting individual needs: Homework:
