Annual Membership Requirements Members not presenting cases or oral reports for Affiliate or Regular membership are required to present two cases treated within the last two years of each Spring 3-Day Meeting. The format for these presentations is listed below. The challenging process of grading these interesting and informative cases will be conducted by the previous years winners. There will be two categories for grading: the most difficult case with the best result and the best finished case. The winners last year were Hayashi Hiroko for the most difficult case, Jason Pair for the most interesting case, James Zahrowski, Nile Sorenson and Gary Kawata for the best finished case. THE EDWARD H. ANGLE SOCIETY OF ORTHODONTISTS ANGLE SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA The format for the cases will be as follows: A. Black binder containing: 1. A summary sheet of pertinent case information on the outside cover: cephalometric analysis, type of malocclusion, non-extraction vs. extraction (include teeth removed), appliance and/or mechanics, treatment time, method of retention. 2. Beginning records: photos, ceph and tracing, panoramic film. 3. Final records: photos, ceph and tracing, panoramic film. Evaluation of results. B. SPRING 3-DAY SCIENTIFIC MEETING MARCH 8-10, 2013 THE LANGHAM HuNTINGTON, PASADENA 1401 SOuTH OAK KNOLL AVENuE, PASADENA, CALIfORNIA 91106 (626) 568-3900 President's Message Dear Angle Southern California Members, The Angle Society has been a wonderful part of my orthodontic life and I am honored to be your President. What has been so meaningful to me besides the great lectures, biennial meetings, and cultivated friendships, has been the presentation of cases by our members. The case-requirement, keeps us striving to find and finish those special cases, and it helps our overall orthodontic treatment become better. It is like finding new Board cases each year! Then when we get to our Spring 3-Day Meeting, we have the chance to learn from our colleagues as we review their treatment plans and outcomes. So be sure to bring your cases and spend some time reviewing those presented, it really is a great opportunity! This year at our Spring 3-Day Meeting we are fortunate to have one of the most sought after speakers in orthodontics, Dr. Hugo De Clerck. He will be lecturing all day on Friday. His work with miniplates is fantastic and I am sure it will inspire all of us. Plan to invite your oral surgeon, as I believe that you will have a lot to discuss! Saturday will be filled with viewing this year's 'member case presentations', the prior year's 'case winner presentations' and this year's 'member oral presentations'. Milt Chan will give a great lecture on 'cuspid substitution' that you will not want to miss and Hap Dougherty will present a lecture on 'early treatment' that will most likely change the way you diagnose! On Sunday morning we will hear from our member, Min-Ho Jung. His resume reads like a book. He will certainly fill the morning with meaningful 'clinical pearls' for us to take back to our practices. See you in March, and be sure to mark your calendars for the EHASO Biennial Meeting, September 6-10, 2013 Vancouver B.C. He received his PhD in 1986 and has maintained a private practice of orthodontics in Brussels, Belgium for the last 22 years. He received the European Research Essay Award in 1988 and in 2011 he received the AJO-DO Helen and BF Dewel Award for an article published in the AJO-DO the previous year. He has been Professor and Chairperson of the Department of Orthodontics at the université Catholique de Louvain from 1989 to 2006. Currently he is an Adjunct Professor at the university of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He is also a former President of the Belgian Orthodontic Society and a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England. The main advantage of skeletal anchorage by modified miniplates is their fixation at a distance from the dental arch. This makes them very suitable for distal movement of the complete upper arch in class II treatment without extraction of premolars. This can be done by sliding mechanics along light archwires or by simultaneous ‘en masse’ retraction of all the upper teeth using heavy wires. For optimal efficiency good control of the vertical dimension is needed. Skeletal anchorage can also be used to intrude overerupted upper molars or to upright lower second molars and for mesial movement of a lower molar in case of agenesis of a second bicuspid. Furthermore miniplates resist better to high discontinuous forces than miniscrews do. Therefore they can be used for intermaxillary orthopedic traction. Class III elastics can be fixed between Bollard anchors on the skeletal base of the maxilla and mandible of young growing patients. Can the growth of the maxilla and/or mandible be stimulated, restricted or redirected? Which biomechanical approach should be used? The results of this continuous pure orthopedic traction will be discussed based on a Cone-beam CT at T1 and T2 registered on the anterior cranial base. The outcome will be compared to a control group and face mask orthopedics. His main research interests are in miniplate skeletal anchorage, biomechanics and orthopedics. He has lectured extensively on these topics throughout the world. During this one-day course all the biomechanics of each application will be explained step by step and will be illustrated by many clinical cases. 4 5 friday, March 8 friday, March 8 MINIPLATE ANCHORAGE for Midface Protraction in Class III Patients and Molar Distalization in Class II Cases Hugo De Clerck, DMD, PhD Hugo De Clerck, DMD, PhD Hugo De Clerck is a graduate of the Rijksuniversiteit Gent’s Orthodontic Program in Belgium.
