TheHoof Print Volume 16, Issue 2 · Quarterly Newsletter · Spring 2015 How to Become a Millionaire Quick, what do these two people have in common? Making A Butterfly Puddle Have you ever seen and wondered why butterflies clustered around muddy spots or puddles? Butterflies “puddle” when they are in search of minerals they need to stay healthy, such as sodium and nitrogen. They use their tongues to extract minerals from damp soil or sand. The puddle also gives the butterflies a helping hand by offering them drink. Butterflies cannot sip water from ponds or other bodies of water since the surface tension of the water is too strong for their delicate wings. • Mrs. Johnson, who lives down the street in the tiny little brick house. She bakes yummy chocolate chip cookies and wears a plain dress everyday. • Kyle, who sits next to you in school. He snaps his gum and is president of the school science club. If you said “nothing,” you are wrong! Believe it or not, old Mrs. Johnson and Kyle have one important thing in common: one plans to be a millionaire—and the other already is! A lot of people think that only sports stars and Hollywood celebrities can be millionaires. But millionaires could be living right in your neighborhood and you won’t even know it. They might not be driving fancy cars or appearing in movies or on TV, but there are plenty of ordinary people who are worth a lot of money. If you think that only adults can become millionaires, don’t tell that to Amanda, an 11-year-old from Minnesota. A few years ago, Amanda made a goal to save $1,000 by the time she turned ten. Amanda hit that target—and has kept right on going. She did it by: Making a butterfly puddle in your own yard is a great way to encourage butterflies to visit. Once you have it made, enjoy watching the butterflies it attracts! • Setting her goal • Creating a plan to achieve it • Sticking to it What You Will Need: It’s not as hard as it seems. With a plan and some discipline, you too can begin the journey to becoming a millionaire. Being a millionaire is this simple: Start today. Set a goal. Start saving money often and regularly. Then keep your eye on that million-dollar prize! • A shallow dish (plastic saucer from a flowerpot or a pie pan) or a shallow birdbath • Top spoil or sand •Flat rocks (not gravel) for butterfly landing strips •Water How To Make: 1. Select a sunny spot where the container won’t be in your way, but will be easy for butterflies to spot. If possible, place it near flowers and try to protect it from the wind. 2. Fill the bottom half of your shallow dish or birdbath with soil or sand. Avoid potting soils with fertilizers. Butterflies can be sensitive to chemicals. That means—you guessed it—Amanda is on her way to becoming a millionaire! Help Us Celebrate Youth in April! Maine Family has some exciting events planned for Youth Month in April.
