The rain comes in sheets
Sweeping the streets,
Here, here, and here,
Umbrellas appear,
Red, blue, yellow, green,
They tilt and they lean
Like mushrooms, like flowers
That grow when it showers.

How is an umbrella
like a mushroom? How
would you describe rain?

Lesson 1
Describe
Weather
Clouds could mean a change
in the weather. What does the
weather look like here?
154
ENGAGE
Building block lesson for 1 ES 3. Weather can be observed, measured, and described.
What is today’s weather?
What to Do
Observe. Look outside.
What is the weather
like today?
Communicate. Draw a
picture of today’s weather.
Explore More
Predict. What will
the weather be
like tomorrow?
You need

crayons
Step
1 IE 4.a. Draw pictures that portray
some features of the thing being
described.

EXPLORE
Vocabulary
What is weather?
weather
temperature
wind
You probably think about the
weather every day. Weather
is what the air and sky are like
each day.
sunny
156
EXPLAIN
cloudy
The air might be warm or cool.
The sky might be sunny or cloudy.
The weather might be rainy,
snowy, or dry.
rainy
snowy
Why is it important to know what
the weather will be?
157
EXPLAIN
How can weather change?
Weather changes from day to day.
Temperature is how cold or warm
the air is. Sometimes the air feels
cold. Sometimes the air feels warm.
The sky can change too.
Some days the sky is clear.
Some days the sky is full of clouds.
A This is a cold day.
158
EXPLAIN
A This is a warm day.
Windy Day
Read a Photo
Which way is the
wind blowing?
Wind can change too.
Wind is moving air.
Sometimes wind moves slowly.
Sometimes wind moves very fast.
How does temperature affect you?
1. Make Predictions. What will the
weather be like tomorrow?
2. Write words that describe weather.
Draw a picture of something you can
wear to stay warm on a cold day.

EVALUATE
Predict
When you predict, you use what you
know to tell what will happen.
Learn It
Cindy looked closely at the picture
below and made a prediction. You
can record your predictions in a
chart like the one Cindy made.

What Happens
It will rain and the
game will stop.

1 IE 4.b. Record observations and data with pictures,
numbers, or written statements.
Try It
Look at the picture below.
1. What do you know about the
weather in the picture?
2. What do you think the
children will do?
3. Use a chart like Cindy’s to
predict what the weather will
be like when you go home
today. Write what happens.

Lesson 2
The Warmth
of the Sun
vineyards, Napa Valley, California
The Sun makes your skin feel
warm. It helps plants grow.
What else do you think the
Sun does?
162
ENGAGE
1 ES 3.c. Students know the sun warms the land, air, and water.
What will the Sun do?
You need
What to Do
Fill two cups with soil.
Feel the soil in both cups.
Put one cup of soil in a
sunny place. Put the other
cup in a shady place. Wait
one hour.
Compare. Feel the soil
in both cups. Draw
and write about what
happened.

Predict. How might
the soil feel at night?

EXPLORE
Vocabulary
What does the Sun do?
Sun
water vapor
Have you ever walked on a
sandy beach on a hot, sunny
day? How did the sand feel?
How did the air feel?
Explore the
warmth of the
Sun with the
Junior Rangers.
164
EXPLAIN
The Sun is a star. Energy from the
Sun heats Earth. The energy of
the Sun warms the land, air, and
water. It helps to make wind,
rain, clouds, and even snow.
Sun
When do you feel the heat
of the Sun?
165
EXPLAIN
What does the Sun do to water?
As the Sun warms water, some
water turns into water vapor.
Water vapor is water that goes
up into the air. You can not see it,
but it is there.

EXPLAIN
www.macmillanmh.com
As water vapor cools in the sky,
it turns back into drops of water
or bits of ice. Clouds are made
of both. When the water drops
or bits of ice get big, they fall to
Earth as rain or snow.
What are clouds made of?
rain falling
1. Make Predictions. Would the ground
feel hotter on a sunny day or a
cloudy day?
2. Write about what the Sun does for us.
Stand up and act out how water goes
from the land up into the air. Reach up
to the sky.

Weather Story
Look at this picture.
What do you think happened?
What do you think the boy is feeling?
What do you think he wanted to do?
Write a Story
Remember
Write a story about this boy.
Make sure to write about the
weather in your story.
A story has a
clear beginning,
middle, and end.

ELA W 1.2.1. Write brief narratives (e.g., fictional, autobiographical)
describing an experience.

they like best on warm, sunny days.
She makes a bar graph to show
what she finds out.
Sunny Day Activities
Make a Graph
Remember
Ask your friends which rainy
day activity they like best.

Measure
Weather
Death Valley National Park, California
The Sun heats air, land, and
water. Air can be very hot in
the desert. What is the
temperature here?
170
ENGAGE
1 ES 3.a. Students know how to use simple tools (e.g., thermometer,
wind vane) to measure weather conditions and record changes
from day to day and across the seasons.
What is the temperature
outside today?
You need
What to Do
Observe. Look at a
thermometer.
Record Data. What is the
temperature outside?

the temperature outside
is higher or lower than
the temperature inside?
How could you find out?

Explore weather
with the Junior
Rangers.
How can you measure
weather?
You can use tools to measure
weather. There are many kinds
of tools for weather. Some tools
measure temperature. Other
tools measure wind and rain.
B These children are measuring
rainfall with a rain gauge.
172
EXPLAIN
A thermometer measures
the temperature of air
and water.
A rain gauge measures
how much rain falls.
A wind vane shows the
direction of the wind.
How do weather tools help us?
173
EXPLAIN
How can you learn more
about the weather?
Scientists use tools to measure
weather just like you. They use
the information they collect to
make weather reports.

newspaper. You can watch weather
reports on television. You can even
find weather reports on the computer.
Why do you think people care
about the weather?
1. Make Predictions. What do you think
the temperature is outside?

A satellite is a tool that looks down
on Earth from space.
It takes pictures of the planet. The
pictures show where it is cloudy and
where it is clear. Meteorologists are
scientists who study the weather.
Satellite pictures help them predict
the weather.
