Features of Biome and Climate The Mediterranean Chaparral supports a variety of vegetation, such as, forests, woodlands, savannas, shrubs, grasslands, cactus plants, and other water storing plants as well. Geography begins at the seashore and extends through rolling farmlands into the mountains. "Chaparral (Mediterranean) Biome." Biomes of the World. N.p., n.d. Miji Suhr, Jack Rasmussen, Ramsay Attisha, Claudia Dickinson Unique Features The Mediterranean Chaparral region is famous for their eclectic wildlife and climate. Its climate can only be found in five regions across the entire world. Although these regions only encompass about 2% of the Earth’s surface, the Mediterranean Chaparral holds 20% of the world’s plan diversity. Seasonal Info (Best time to visit & view wildlife) To avoid the extreme weather, it is advised to visit during the Spring, when the weather is warm and breezy. During the winter, weather can get overly wet and rainy, and extremely hot and dry in the summer. The Spring is a nice average of the two extreme seasons. Tourism Activities Suggested The Chaparral offers a wide range of activities for people of all ages. These activities include: hiking, biking, camping and sightseeing for unique animals and plants. After a long day exploring the wilderness, relax and spend time swimming, sailing, and/or sunbathing on the historic Mediterranean coastline. **FUN FACT: The Mediterranean Chaparral region is known for breeding famous bull fighting bulls. ** Characteristic Plant & Animal Species The region is composed of mostly shrubs and grasslands, with low growing vegetation. Some areas are made up of larger trees and leaf forests. These areas also support plants such as: evergreens, cacti, fruit trees, and cork ore. Wildlife includes wild goats, cattle, horses, rabbits, eagles, reptiles, and insects. Examples of Adaptation Environmental Issue Discovered Plants have developed drought resistance in order to survive short wet winters and long dry summers. During the hot and arid summers, forest fires are common amongst the Chaparral. The shrubby vegetation and dryness contribute to the frequent spontaneous outbreaks. Most plants in the region have adapted to rapidly regenerate after forest fires. Animals have adapted to the rough terrain by becoming agile climbers, scavenging large areas, and shifting their diets. **HAZARD: Tourists should take extra precautions when travelling in the summer.**
