Present tense of regular –ar verbs Every verb has a stem and an ending. The three endings for verbs in Spanish are –ar, -er, and –ir. The stem tells the meaning of the verb and when the stem is in the infinitive form, we don’t know who is doing the action or when the action is being performed. Example: infinitive hablar (to talk) tocar(to play) practicar(to practice) stem habl toc practic ending ar ar ar To conjugate a verb means to change it so that we know who is doing the action and when the action is being performed. To conjugate a verb you take the stem of the verb, drop the –ar ending and add the 6 endings. These endings are o, as, a, amos, áis and an. I talk You talk He, she talks, you talk hablar (to talk/speak) hablo hablamos hablas habláis habla hablan we talk you all talk (in Spain) they talk, you all talk The ending of the verb in Spanish tells who is doing the action, so you don’t always need a subject pronoun in front of the verb. Use the subject pronouns when you want to add emphasis or if you need to clarify who the subject is. Example: Nado en la piscina. I swim in the pool. You don’t need the Yo at the beginning of the sentence because we know that the o ending tells that I am doing the action. Example: Nada en la piscina. *Needs to be clarified!* There needs to be a subject pronoun in this sentence because it could either mean: She swims in the pool. He swims in the pool. or You swim in the pool.
