What Factors Affect
Weathering?
1. Climate
• Temperature
– Warmer climates have more chemical
weathering
– Colder climates tend to have more physical
weathering
•Moisture
-As moisture increases, weathering will
increase
• What
conditions
create the
strongest
mechanical
weathering?
2. Surface Area Exposed
• When a larger rock is broken into
smaller pieces, more surface area will be
exposed
• Weathering rate will increase as
exposure to the atmosphere increases
What is the surface area of the
cube below?
Answer = 24cm2
What would the total surface area be if the cube was cut in
half in all directions?
48cm2
3. Composition of Rock
• Different rocks respond in different
ways to the same weathering processes
– Harder minerals such as quartz have more
resistance to weathering
– Some minerals such as feldspar, calcite and
gypsum are more affected by both
mechanical and chemical weathering
Limestone is not resistant to
weathering.
