Muscles Working With Bones
This project shows students how the bones and muscles work together to create
movement.
Curriculum/State Standards
Physiology: Students understand the
coordinated structures and functions of
the organ systems.
Overview
Students worked in pairs to create human
arm models. The models represented the
skeletal and muscular systems. These
models were made with wood, hinges,
elastic bands and hot glue. Students
were able to observe a model of the arm
muscles and bones. Students made the
arm model move at the elbow joint by
pulling on the elastic bands. This activity
showed students that muscles only pull on
bones to create movement and muscles
never push on bones. Students were also
able to see that muscles always work in
pairs.
Strategies/Activities
9-12
GRADE LEVEL
Learn about the skeletal and muscular
systems and how they interact.
Culminating Activity
Making of the arm model.
Evaluation Method
Completed arm model and written
description of how the model worked.
Objectives
The student will be able to make a
working model of the arm bones and
muscles.
The student will be able to observe how
the skeletal and muscular systems work
together to create movement through the
use of a model.
The student will be able to write a
description of the arm movement.
