1. assonance: The repetition of vowel sounds at any place in a series of words
2. alliteration: The repetition of consonant sounds at the beginning of a series of words
3. onomatopoeia: The use of words that imitate sounds
4. simile: A figure of speech (similar to a metaphor) that makes an indirect comparison between
two unlike things using either like or as
5. metaphor: A direct comparison of two unlike things often using linking verbs such as: am, is,
was, were
6. hyperbole: Deliberate exaggeration
7. personification: When a non-living object has been given qualities of a person
8. rhyme scheme: The pattern of rhyme between lines of a poem. It is referred to by using letters
to indicate which lines rhyme. Lines designated with the same letter all rhyme with each other
9. stanza: A group of lines in a poem, considered as a unit. Many poems are divided into stanzas
that are separated by spaces. They function similarly to paragraphs
10. haiku: A three-line poem that originated from Japan, often about nature, with a syllable
pattern of 5, 7, 5
