Lesson 43 Surface Area.notebook January 09, 2015 Warmup Exercises 1. Give the definition for lateral surface area. 4 ft 8 ft 9 ft 2. Give the area of the front of the figure: 3. Give the area of the top of the figure: 4. Give the area of the right side of the figure: 5. Give the area of the bottom of the figure: 1 Lesson 43 Surface Area.notebook January 09, 2015 Lesson 43: Surface Area The surface area of a solid is the combined area of the surfaces of the solid. We distinguish between total surface area and lateral surface area, which is the combined area of surfaces on the sides of a solid and does not include the area(s) of the base(s). We can find the lateral surface area of prisms and cylinders by multiplying the perimeter or the circumference of the base by the height. 2 Lesson 43 Surface Area.notebook January 09, 2015 Example: The figure represents a cube with edges 10 cm long. a. Find the total surface area of the cube. b. Find the lateral surface area of the cube. 10 cm 3 Lesson 43 Surface Area.notebook January 09, 2015 Example: Before buying paint for the sides of this building, Maria calculated its lateral surface area. Find its lateral surface area. 10 ft 15 ft 20 ft 12 ft 12 ft 4 Lesson 43 Surface Area.notebook January 09, 2015 A net is a two‐dimensional image of the surfaces of a solid. A net can help us visualize a solid’s surfaces. Here is a net of a cube. We see the six square faces of the cube. 5 Lesson 43 Surface Area.notebook January 09, 2015 Example: The figure shows the dimensions of a cereal box. Estimate the surface area of the box. 7 ¾ in 12 ¼ in 2 ¾ in 6 Lesson 43 Surface Area.notebook January 09, 2015 Homework: Lesson 43 a‐d & 3‐17 (O) 7
