E-VISION Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Neurosciences FACULTY & STAFF HIGHLIGHTS Deborah Ferrington, PhD, presented her research at the University of Buffalo as part of the “Distinguished Lectures in Vision Science” on January 19, 2017. The title of her talk was “Mitochondria: The Retina’s Achilles’ Heel in AgeRelated Macular Degeneration.” Maria Hytti, PhD, from the University of Eastern Finland, is doing a 3-month research visit in the laboratory of Dr. Deborah Ferrington. Dr. Hytti’s work involves investigating how damaged mitochondria can induce inflammation in cultured retinal pigment epithelial cells. Caroline Hallbech, MD, by popular vote among faculty and residents, Dr. Hallbech will serve as the 2017-2018 resident representative. Dara Koozekanani, MD, PhD, was a recipient of the Allina HOPE (Hospital Outstanding Patient Experience) Award. The HOPE award recognizes excellence in service to patients as measured by the Press Ganey HCAHPS patient experience survey. Michael Lee, MD, chair of the Neuro-Ophthalmology subcommittee, met with the Annual Meeting Program Committee (AMPC), in San Francisco, CA, on February 20. The AMPC determines all of the learning content (symposia, instruction courses, etc.) for the AAO annual meeting each fall. LETTER FROM THE CHAIR Greetings, It has been one year since the opening of the new Clinical Surgery Center (CSC) on Fulton Ave. Most of the subspecialty clinics moved out of the Phillips Wangensteen Building with the exception of the adult eye clinic on the 9th floor. We have started conversation with the University of Minnesota to develop a site for a permanent location of the Adult Eye Clinic and the Ophthalmology & Visual Neurosciences Departmental offices. At this time the Minnesota Lions Vision Foundation is strongly considering making a naming gift to establish the Lions Eye Institute on campus. That new facility will also be the permanent location of the Minnesota Lions Eye Surgery Center which was established last year. I will keep you posted as this exciting conversation moves forward. Earlier this month, Virginia and I attended the Lions District 5M11 mid-winter convention in Mahnomen, MN. District 5M11 crosses the Southern border with Canada, and over 200 Lions from more than 30 clubs in two countries attended the conference. On Sunday morning, I was asked to give the Keynote address at the breakfast meeting, and a lecture entitled “A Vision for Vision” was presented about the potential for naming the Lion Eye Institute and what a tremendous resource this will be for the State of Minnesota. The concept was very well received and a straw poll at the conclusion of the lecture showed very broad support for this idea. Other important news is that Lions International will celebrate its 100th Anniversary this year. In addition, Minnesota Lion Brian Sheehan has announced that he will seek the endorsement for his bid to run for 3rd Vice-President of Lions International, at the upcoming MD5M 2017 convention in Bemidji, MN. If Brian succeeds, he will be President of Lions International in 2021-2022, exactly 100 years after the last person from Minnesota, Ewen W. Cameron of Minneapolis, held this office. With warmest regards, Erik RECENT EVENTS On January 29, The Oculoplastics and Orbital Surgery service held an advanced lacrimal and orbital surgery course with the residents and oculoplastic fellows. The course was supported by Stryker and used a mobile surgical trailer that is equipped with state of the art intraoperative navigation and surgical instrumentation. The residents were able to perform DCR, endoscopic DCR, orbital decompression, and orbital fracture repair with microplates. Many thanks to the Stryker surgical team for helping to coordinate this event.
