Practical Applications of New Optical
Coherence Tomography (OCT)
Technologies (SD-OCT, OCT-A,
SS-OCT) for Ocular Disease Diagnosis
and Management
Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) is now a widely utilized
ophthalmic diagnostic technology. This program, which features
the co-inventors of the technology as faculty, is unique in its
approach. The basic physical principles of OCT are reviewed,
followed by a comprehensive discussion of current clinical
applications in the management of glaucoma and retinal diseases.
The different commercially available spectral domain OCT
systems will be discussed with emphasis on the advantages and
disadvantages of each system. There will also be a discussion
of the use of anterior segment OCT in the management of
keratorefractive surgery and in decision making with phakic
anterior chamber lenses.

This two-day course is designed for physicians whose clinical
practices include general ophthalmology, refractive surgery,
pathologies of cornea, and lens. Using an interactive, case-based
approach, the distinguished speakers will present a variety of
vignettes and practice pearls to illustrate clinical dilemmas in the

Research Colloquium
This one-day scientific meeting assembles a broad array of
research scientists and clinicians whose expertise and focus are
principally directed to orbital oncology, traumatic optic nerve injury,
and stem cell and biomedical innovations for immediate clinical
application. The core objective of the meeting is to move the
orbital research community to a more multi- and interdisciplinary
scientific mindset by removing barriers and creating a conducive
environment to collaborative interactions among investigators from
different disciplines. The presentations will highlight cutting edge
molecular biology, genomic, and proteomic approaches to better
understand the molecular underpinnings of these diseases and
bring the state-of-the-art in advanced biomaterials and regenerative
medicine technologies for translating research findings into
clinical reality - with the ultimate aim of achieving improved visual
outcomes and quality of life for orbital diseases in which effective
therapy remains elusive. .

Ocular Surface Diseases Course 2017
Ocular surface disorders are emerging as the most prevalent
diseases in ophthalmology affecting visual function. In fact, dry
eye is the most common ocular surface condition that has a
significant impact in the quality of life of our patients and in the
outcome of many ophthalmic procedures in all ophthalmology
sub-specialties. This one-day course is designed to provide an
update in novel approaches to the diagnosis and treatment of
ocular surface diseases. A panel of distinguished guest speakers
and Bascom Palmer faculty will focus on providing an introduction
to the evaluation of the ocular surface and therapeutic approaches
for general ophthalmologists and specialists who want to develop
a simple and comprehensive algorithm that could be used to treat
patients and improve surgical outcomes.

The Edward W.D. Norton Lecture, jointly sponsored by Bascom
Palmer Eye Institute and the Miami Ophthalmological Society, is
named for the insightful physician, professor and administrator
who founded Bascom Palmer Eye Institute and guided its growth
for more than three decades. The Victor T. Curtin Lecture is
named in honor of the Institute’s first faculty recruit, mentor, scholar
and dedicated teacher. The Randy Campo (resident, 1981) and
Robert Haimovici (resident, 1990) Lectures are named in memory
of these outstanding alumni, both of whom left an indelible mark on
