 St. Patrick High School Course Outline RELIGION 25
Revised Jan 2017 World Religions: A Canadian Catholic Perspective A Study of the major religions of the world helps the student grasp the meaning of the words attributed to Edith Stein, “When you seek truth, you seek God, whether you know it or not.” Christ’s disciples are called to live out the Great Commandment to love God and one’s neighbour as oneself. In this course they will explore the Catholic faith in comparison with other faiths. Through their study they will learn the importance the Church assigns to ecumenism and inter-­faith relations and develop an understanding of the tenets and practices that are core to many of the world’s faith practices. As an academic discipline this course seeks to inform students about the other religion, as it explores each religious tradition as an independent belief system and as a religion in dialogue with Catholicism. Each religion is not studied as a stand-­alone, objectively neutral entity but as a relational entity in our increasingly interdependent world. As a religious endeavour, Religion 25 seeks to bring students into an ever-­deepening relationship with God and God’s creation. World Religions 25 provides students with new information, new understanding, and an opportunity to question their present systems of meaning with research, discussion, reflection and other activities as core for this course. Text: Chapter 10 Text: Chapter 11 World Religions: A Canadian Catholic Perspective Breakdown of Summative Assessment Category Journal Entries/ Prayer Assignment Chapter Performance Tasks Chapter Tests Final Course Assignment Final Exam Description % Numerous journal suggestions appear throughout the course. Some will be developed as oral discussions;; others as written responses. Five written responses along with Journal Entry Assessment Tools (AM 2 or AM 10) must be submitted along with. Numerous suggestions are provided throughout the course to engage students in prayer, including the opportunities to develop prayer services or meditations. The Chapter Task Suggestions focus on the specific religion being studied. Suggestions are included for Chapters 1, 2, 4, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, and 11. Over the entire course, four such Chapter Tasks will be required. This marks category also includes marks for tests on various chapters or combinations of chapters. Chapter tests may be omitted on those chapters that use a Chapter Performance Task as a summative evaluation. This is a cumulative project that is part of the final assessment but introduced in the first class or two. The Assessment Master mid-­point check-­in, AM 8, is an important tool for students as they work towards completion of this Final Course Assignment. Work will be submitted for formative assessment periodically through the allotted time for project completion. 15% Optional in place of final course assignment 20% 40% 25% 20%
