-attitude -goals We are currently trying to play catch-up because of all of the days we have not been in school. We will be finishing up our unit on Linear Equations by the end of the first week of February. We will then be moving on to our Systems of Linear Equations unit. Solving a system of equations can be useful in calculating the cost difference between various payment plans, or in figuring out when a business enterprise will break even. Examining the cost of video rentals at two different stores as a function of the number of videos rented, or looking at the monthly cost of two cell phone plans as a function of minutes used are examples of systems of equations. As we move through the unit, ask your child to share what they have learned. Students will continue learning about expansion that started with the presidency of Thomas Jefferson. Students will learn about the Louisiana Purchase, Lewis and Clark, Marbury vs. Madison, and the War of 1812 throughout the month of February. The Washington D.C. trip is still in the process of being planned, and I am hoping to have the trip schedule completed soon. The school is still waiting on our travel agent to send us an update of the final cost. Once I know the final figure for the trip, I will send the information home with the students. After a brief short-story unit, English 9 students have begun their historical fiction unit and are reading My Brother Sam is Dead to make literary connections and apply their knowledge of the Revolutionary War, gained in Social Studies. They will critique characters and analyze plot development in their end-ofthe-unit essays. 8th grade ELA students have resumed the school year with a short-story unit. This will be followed by poetry and writing. Students have begun to look at forces and motion. This month, we will delve deeper into physical science with an examination of friction and gravity, and we will also take a look at Newton’s Laws of Motion. If the weather turns to our favor, we should be able to finish physical science and move into Earth science before the end of the month.
