Role model one can always choose to be Like : Emperor Green Ashoka, the great (294-232 BC), one of the greatest emperors known to Indian history, and also perhaps first known king in world history who planted trees to provide shade and opened inns for the shelter of travelers and laid out green parks and gardens to beautify his kingdom. Wells and tanks were also constructed for the benefit of his people. He believed in nonviolence and so he banned the sacrifice of animals. Besides this he opened clinics for birds and animals too. He opened charitable hospitals and dispensaries for the welfare of the poor. His good works earned him the name of Devanamapriya Priyadarshi. You must be the change you wish to see in the world -Mahatma Gandhi. Bapuji planting a tulsi tree at Sevagram Ashram, Vardha, Maharashtra, India. Helping hands are better than Praying lips - Mother Theresa Smt. Leela Laxma Reddy with Mother Theresa Look at the sky. We are not alone. The whole universe is friendly to us and conspires only to give the best to those who dream and work. -Abdul Kalam Smt. & Sri Leela Laxma Reddy with APJ Abdul Kalam on 7.3.2013 to invite for CGR programme "A man does not plant a tree for himself, he plants it for posterity."- Alexander Smith { 3 | Foreword With the inspiration of great emperor Ashoka, Mahatma Gandhi, Mother Teresa, many noble souls and champions for the earth, I felt the need of serving Mother Nature with more dedication and enthusiasm. Earth, our beautiful home, is the only known planet, in the universe with all bounty of life sustaining systems. Our ancestors revered nature and mother earth, lived prudent and in a symbiotic relationship with background ecosystems. We, the modern man, distanced from the soul of mother earth, trying to control and command her with profligate intentions, weighing nature only with instrumental value ignoring the intrinsic value. We are living in a time of ecological devastation, in which our materialistic culture has had a catastrophic effect on the ecosystems. We have pillaged and polluted the earth. Techno-economic complexities, entropic and myopic exploitation pushes the legacy of living planet to a brink. The earth needs our concern, it needs us to acknowledge its sacred nature; that is not just something to use and dispose. The earth in balance only assures our quality of life, overall wellbeing and ensures a safer, peaceful and livable home for progeny. We have to become a greener society thriving in green economy, ever safeguarding natural capital on earth. Witnessing the rapid erosion of greenery, degradation ecosystems in our native villages in semi-arid South India, we strongly felt the need of a massive green movement to sustain green legacy of our planet. It's the prime factor in the genesis of Council for Green Revolution, a purposeful green think tank and catalyst for change. The environmental revolution requires all kinds of innovation, intervention, energies and enthusiasm. Local to global concerns like desertification, pollution, climate change, loss of biodiversity, development issues determined our action plans while global frameworks like SDGs and UN conventions guides our work time to time. From the beginning, CGR has been encouraged and supported by environmentalists, academicians, intellectuals, scientists, researchers, organizations, entrepreneurs and many other concerned people. None of our work would be possible without their unflagging support to whom we are always grateful. Started its environmental mission with planting trees, CGR has become instrumental in planting 2.8 million saplings in 14 districts of AP and Telangana. Other major initiates are on conservation of easternghats, environmental awareness, green village, policy work, publications. It has also been the time for the emergence and orientation for a major traverse ahead. The booklet not only provides a synaptic view of the last five years work, but we hope that, our ambitions, mission, accomplishments encapsulated here would kindle more movements for a greener world. The plants are growing healthier with his thorough care and protection. A son's three day green fast Naveen, a 8th class student from Kalwakurthy, Mahabubnagar district, created a sensation. Inspired by CGRs green mission in his village, he fasted three days persuading his uncle to give up selling wood. He succeeded as his uncle gave it up and had chosen other business. In the process he ensured protection of number of big trees from felling for the purpose of selling them. Innovative fence Rajesh Goud, a 9th class student from Velijal village, Mahabubnagar district didn't lose the zeal though he finds its difficult to get Rs.2 for a coil of jute thread required for fence. He made it through the threads of old saris of his mother and fenced the plant. The plants are growing taller and healthy in the unique fence because of his tender care. He was awarded with best green student and became popular through pamphlets and media for his commitmement. The greenest school A Rakhi made up of leaves and flowers by students to observe “Vruksha Bandan” on the day of Raksha Bandan A novel way of observing plant birthday, students prepared a cake made out of entirely fruits and dry fruits. Reaping of fruits, Mango’s from a tree planted under Vanaprerana Young minds and tender hands made a difference. Gaddampalli School in Telkapalli mandal, Mahabubnagar district is one of the greenest schools with ample tree cover. A new mile stone in the green journey of the school is that the students with the support and facilitation of CGR, Vandemataram and teachers have started a nursery to make the village green. Children eagerly worked on soil mixing, cover filling, planting seeds and seedlings in the covers. Thanks to the support of school management and villagers, its a rare green initiative which stands as a model for many schools in around the region. There is always Music amongst the trees in the Garden, but our hearts must be very quiet to hear it. - Minnie Aumonier { 8 | In the year 2015, CGR has facilitated plantation of more than a half million saplings in the state of Telangana, as part of State Government's ambitious project viz “Haritha Haram” through 100,000 School Children of Nizamabad (involving 446 schools of 36 mandals) and Warangal (involving around 550 high schools of 51 mandals) Districts naming it as “Bangaru Telangana ku Balala Haritha Haram” . The Aral Sea is a classic example for water stress. The lake has been steadily shrinking since the 1960s with the diversion of rivers that feed the Aral Sea for agricultural irrigation. With the receding waters went a large fishing industry, leaving high rates of unemployment and fishing boats left to dry on the former shoreline. Also local ecosystems, climate, hydrology and farming are effected. During the last 300 years the planet earth lost 50% of its forest cover. The above picture shows one of the example for alarming deforestation, in Borneo, Indonesia. World Health Organization (WHO) in December 2014 says that 13 of the top 20 most polluted cities are from India. Delhi's state government hopes to cut pollution in the capital by restricting the number of vehicles on the roads by adopting ode and even formula From Jan.1 to 15, those driving cars with license plates ending with an even number will only be allowed on the roads on evennumbered dates At the United Nations Sustainable Development Summit on 25 September 2015, more than 150 world leaders adopted the new 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, including the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The new 17 global Sustainable Development Goals and its 169 associated targets, which follow and expand on the millennium development goals (MDGs), from January 2016 is a big leap from the eight global development goals and 18 associated targets of MDGs. With all 196 nations having a say, the UN climate deal, in the UNFFCC, COP 21, PARIS, has proven that compromise works for the planet. And all the ministers pledged to share the responsibility of containing global warming well below 20C. 14 We & the Environment CGR observe and begins its annual work on Earth Day, the April 22. The Great Tree In My Home Oh the tree* in my home, You are great, among trees, So many generations were enriched Through decades, with your help, so kind, Many now live under your sagely care, Your song of life, I love to hear. Oh my friend Kalam, I crossed age hundred like your father and mother, Everyday morning, You walk an hour I also see you on full moon nights, Walking with a thinking mood. I know my friend, the thoughts in your mind, “What can I give?” When In April, you look at me, Again and again with deep concern, Seeing me shed thousands of leaves, You ask me my friend, What is my burden? Leaves I Shed to give birth to new leaves, Flowers bloom attracting butterflies and bees. So, kalam, it is not burden for me, It is a beautiful phase of my life.
