Problem
Short to power
Open circuit
Test
Test Result
Voltage is zero
1. Disconnect the 15pin EC2 connector at
the ECU. With the
ignition ON, measure
the voltage between
Pin 12 of the 15-pin
EC2 ECU connector
and a good chassis
ground.
Action
Check for intermittent
short to power in
Circuit 376R. If the
problem persists,
suspect the ECU is at
fault.
Blink
Code
7-3
Voltage not zero Check for short to
power in Circuit 376R.
Repair as necessary.
2. Disconnect the 15pin EC2 connector at
the ECU. With the
ignition OFF, measure
the resistance between
Pin 12 of the 15-pin
EC2 ECU connector
and a good chassis
ground.
Resistance is 59 If problem persists,
suspect ECU is at fault
to 71 ohms
Resistance is 71 Check for poor or
loose connections in
to 680 ohms
circuit 376R and GND.
If resistance is right at
680 Ohms, the
retarder relay coil is
open.
If resistance is right at
Resistance is
greater than 680 680 Ohms then the
retarder relay is open.
ohms
If greater than 680
Ohms the retarder
relay coil and its
resistor are both open,
or circuit 376R is open,
or retarder relay coil
ground circuit is open.
repair as necessary. *

Short to ground
3. Disconnect the 15pin EC2 connector at
the ECU. With the
ignition OFF, measure
the resistance between
Pin 12 of the 15-pin
EC2 ECU connector
and a good chassis
ground.
Resistance is 59 If problem persists,
to 71 Ohms
suspect ECU is at fault
Resistance
below 59 ohms
Check circuit 376R for
short to ground, check
for shorted retarder
relay coil and resistor.
Repair as necessary. *
* NOTE: The retarder relay has a 680 Ohm resistor in parallel with the coil. Proper resistance across the coil terminals (85 and 86) should be approximately 59
to 71 Ohms (this is the combined resistance through both the coil and the resistor). If the resistor is open, the resistance across the coil terminals will be
approximately 72 Ohms ±7 Ohms. If the relay coil is open, the resistance across the coil will be approximately 680 Ohms.
