Introduction One of the aims of the founders of the Macular Disease Society in 1987 was to sponsor research. The Society has a creditable history of achieving this aim. Our recent history of grants awarded is shown at Annex A. To clarify the scale of our funding, the total grants awarded in recent years is as follows: 2006 - £106,500 for 4 projects 2007 - £138,500 for 5 projects 2008 - £181,000 for 3 projects 2009 - £118,000 for 3 projects 2010 - £126,000 for 4 projects We are likely to have up to £140,000 to allocate for the next research year starting from September 2011. This could, for example, divide into sponsorship for three projects. Most of our sponsored projects in the last 5 years have been for one year only but more recently we have also funded 2 year projects. Our members value highly our sponsorship of research and we are very keen to sponsor projects that are likely to produce a tangible result in the fields of finding a cure, developing a treatment or improving the quality of life of patients with AMD. Progress and results must be written up for Side View our magazine and Digest our journal.
