Summer Homework Mr. Cheek – AP World History – 2016-‐2017 Due on Monday, 8/15/2016 Name: _______________________________ All portions of the AP World History 2016 Summer Homework are due on the first day of class in August. Late work is NOT accepted in AP World History. The AP World History 2016 Summer Homework is divided into four parts. Some portions (see links below) will require Internet access. Part 1: Scavenger Hunt – Answer the questions found in this packet by using the online document available at the link below. This is the official description (effective Fall 2016) of the AP World History course as published by the College Board, the organization that creates the AP World History exam that you’ll be taking in May 2017. Link for Part 1: http://tinyurl.com/zazs6mt Part 2: World Geography – Using the recommended websites (or other websites of your choice), follow the instructions to fill in the blank world maps provided. STUDY your finished maps, and the two completed maps provided. Be prepared to take a quiz over this material during the first week of class in August. Know each map location and know it well. Part 3: “First Peoples; First Farmers” – Read Chapter 1 from the AP World History textbook (link below). Take notes as you read. As a starting point, I recommend approximately one page of detailed, handwritten notes (where one page equals one side of a sheet) for every six pages of textbook readings. Obviously, the length of your notes does not necessarily indicate quality, and the presence of factors such as handwriting size, detail per line of notes, etc. will also have an impact here. Your notes will be collected as part of your summer assignment. STUDY your finished notes, and if your notes are lacking, you may need to re-‐read the chapter as part of your studies. Be prepared to take a reading test over this material during the first week of class in August. You will need to know the contents of the reading in detail in order to perform well on the reading test. This reading test is quite challenging; if you wait until the last minute to make your preparations, you do so at your own peril! Link for Part 3: http://www.princetonschools.net/cheekchpt1 To get an idea of the depth of understanding needed in order to succeed on the reading test, consider the following sample questions (these are samples only, your actual test will be considerably longer): 1. Which describes a religious or spiritual aspect of Paleolithic culture? A) An outlook that sharply distinguished between the material and spiritual worlds B) A single belief system based on monotheism and animism C) A cyclical view of time that emphasized regeneration and disintegration D) The worship of masculinity, as reflected in universally male images and statues Summer Homework Mr. Cheek – AP World History – 2016-‐2017 Due on Monday, 8/15/2016 Name: _______________________________ 2. Crops spread more slowly in the Americas as compared to Eurasia in part because A) farmers in the Americas developed no grain crop that could sustain large populations. B) the successful domestication of large mammals by people in the Americas made crop domestication less important. C) of the north/south orientation of the American continents. D) farming practices were entering roughly similar environments. 3. What made the Pacific voyages of Austronesian speaking peoples different from all other initial human migrations? A) The Pacific voyages utilized ice bridges in order to reach New Zealand and other Pacific Islands. B) The Pacific voyages were undertaken by agricultural people who carried domesticated plants and animals with them. C) The Pacific voyages did not result in the extinction of local animal species in the places that Austronesian speaking peoples settled. D) The Pacific voyages happened at a much slower pace than all previous human migrations. Part 4: “The Worst Mistake in the History of the Human Race” – In his essay “The Worst Mistake in the History of the Human Race” (link below), Jared Diamond examines two schools of thought on the agricultural revolution (also known as the Neolithic Revolution). The Neolithic Revolution (around 10,000 years ago) involved new ways of obtaining food; instead of only hunting and gathering, human societies gradually began to plant and harvest crops and to domesticate and raise animals. First, read the essay. Then, write a five-‐paragraph essay (either typed or handwritten) based on your specific arguments and using the following format: • Paragraph 1: Introduction paragraph (Be sure to include a statement of your thesis, or central argument, which in this case will involve agreement or disagreement with the author.) • Paragraph 2: Compare and contrast the progressivist (the more common, pro-‐
agriculture view) and revisionist (Diamond’s criticisms of agriculture) interpretations of the agricultural revolution. • Paragraphs 3 AND 4: Do you agree or disagree with Diamond’s interpretation of this transition in human history as mankind’s great mistake? (Most of your arguments will be presented here, making this the most important part of your essay.) • Paragraph 5: Conclusion paragraph (Be sure to restate your thesis, though not necessarily verbatim from your introduction paragraph). Summer Homework Mr. Cheek – AP World History – 2016-‐2017 Due on Monday, 8/15/2016 Name: _______________________________ Part 2: World Geography Familiarity with the world and its physical features is an important part of AP World History. While you will not be specifically tested on physical features when you take the AP World History Exam in May, many questions will assume that you have some familiarity with the earth and its topography. Additionally, there will be numerous references to these features during class and in course readings. You are expected to have a mastery of basic physical geography, regional delineations, and the general locations of the birth of agriculture and early civilizations on the first day of school. Your packet contains two maps showing how certain regions will be identified on the AP World History Exam. The importance of these maps is better conveyed via their former title, “Regions Commonly Misidentified in AP World History Essays.” Once you’ve labeled the three blank maps that follow, be prepared to take a World Geography Quiz over this information on the first day of class in August. You will be expected to know from memory the contents of the two maps provided as well as the three maps you will label when you take your quiz. (In other words, STUDY all five maps.) Complete Maps #1-‐3 based on the instructions below. (Do not label your maps using a numbered key, since this will make studying (and grading) quite difficult.) There are a variety of online sources available that you may find helpful for this portion of the summer assignment. Suggested online resources for Maps #1-‐2 include (but are not limited to): • http://maps.nationalgeographic.com/ • http://go.hrw.com/atlas/norm_htm/world.htm For Map #3, feel free to explore other online (or offline) sources. Map #1 – Global Physical Features (Land) – Label the map with the following physical features: Land Masses • Antarctica • Greenland • Madagascar • Sri Lanka • Indonesian Archipelago • Japanese Archipelago • Philippine Archipelago • New Zealand • British Isles Mountains • Alps • Andes • Appalachian • Atlas • Himalayans • Ghats (E & W) • Great Dividing Range • Kunlun Shan • Sierra Madres (Occidental & Oriental) • Pyrenees • Rockies • Taurus • Tian Shan • Urals • Zagros •
