Macromolecule Coloring Assignment
Standard 1b and 1h
Directions:
1) Start with the carbohydrate page. Choose a color for each bold, capitalized
letter in the legend.
2) Next, find any picture or symbols that are identified with a letter. Color it in
with the color you chose in step one. Continue with the other letters.
3) Now, do the same with the other pages.
4) Answer the questions below on a separate sheet of paper when you are done.
Questions-Carbohydrates
1) Letters “A” and “B” represent a type of sugar called a monosaccharide. Give
some examples of monosaccharides. (see page 34 in text book)
2) Letter “D” shows a larger structure made from 2 monosaccharides bonded
together. What kind of sugar is this? (see page 34 in text book)
3) Letters “F” and “G” are much larger sugars called polysaccharides. Describe
their structure and give some examples. (see page 34 in text book)
Questions-Lipids
1) List the four types of lipids shown. (see page 35 in text book)
2) Look at the structure of saturated fat and the structure of unsaturated fat.
Do you notice any differences between the two structures? (see page 35 in text
book)
Questions-Proteins
1) Letter “A” is showing a group of atoms called an “amino acid.” What type of bond
is holding together amino acids in a chain?
2) Look at the “Primary Structure.” Notice that instead of drawing in the atoms
for each amino acid, it now just represents them as a box with letters like “val,”
“his,” and “leu.” There are shortened versions of names for a few of the over
twenty amino acids found in proteins. Now, describe the primary structure of a
protein in words. (see page 36 in text book)
3) List some examples of proteins found in your body. (see page 36 in text book)
Conclusion:
1) Look at the structures of all 3 macromolecules (proteins, carbohydrates, and
lipids). Describe three ways they are all similar? Describe 3 ways they are
different?
