Nitrous Oxide and Oxygen Inhalation Sedation
What is nitrous oxide/oxygen? The use of Nitrous Oxide and Oxygen (N2O/O2) inhalation
sedation is a conscious sedation technique, which is a safe and effective behavior management
treatment for selected dental patients. When inhaled, it is absorbed by the body and has a
calming effect. Normal breathing eliminates nitrous oxide/oxygen from the body. The onset of
action is fast, and the depth of sedation is easily controlled.
N2O/O2 is safe. N2O/O2 is non-addictive. It is mild, easily taken, and then quickly eliminated
by the body. Your child remains fully conscious and keeps all natural reflexes when breathing
nitrous oxide/oxygen. Additionally, the technique provides a variable degree of analgesia for
some patients. It should not be used in patients unwilling or unable to breathe through the nose.
N2O/O2 inhalation sedation may be used to:
● Reduce or eliminate anxiety in patients so safe and comfortable dental treatment is provided
● Reduce movement and reaction to dental treatment
● Enhance communication and patient cooperation
● Raise the pain reaction threshold
● Increase tolerance for longer appointments
●Aid in treatment of the mentally, physically, or medically challenged patients
● Reduce gagging
Preparing for sedation: Please follow these restrictions prior to a N2O/O2 sedation to limit any
nausea and vomiting that can occur on a full stomach.
● Your child should not eat any solid foods or drink any non-clear liquids after midnight. This
restriction includes milk, breast milk, chewing gum, coffee, formula, juices with pulp, candy and
tooth brushing.
● If the appointment is in the afternoon, the patient may have a light breakfast, if needed, at least
four to six hours prior to the appointment time. A light breakfast includes: toast, dry cereal, plain
bagel, applesauce, and clear liquids.
● Your child may drink clear liquids up to one hour before the scheduled appointment time.
Clear liquids include Pedialyte®, water, flat carbonated beverages, Jello® water, Kool Aid® and
juices you can see through, such as apple juice.
● All current medications should be taken with clear liquids.
● Your child should dress comfortably in loose-fitting clothing such as a sweat suit.
Only the patient is permitted to the treatment room. Please do not bring other children to this
appointment unless you can supervise them in the waiting room.
